    Posted: 01 February 2011 at 4:24pm
Has anyone heard this? My friend is adament that from February any new enrolments won't get the 20 hours free childcare. I have tried to find some info and haven't heard anything about that so figuired it must just be their centre but she is adament it is all cancelled across the board? She says kids already recieving 20 hours will get it but not if they enroll or become eligable after Feb....

Anyone?

Ive heard from several people it was canceled. But havent read it.

Luckily it doesnt affect me yet.

My friend whose child attends kindy said there fees have gone up to $150 per term rather than $50 per term.

I have not heard anything yet but we are not back at kindy till the end of the week.

If that is the case Labour will use it as a way back into power as it was them that brought it in & National have never liked it as it does not benefit the business market as that is where there focus is.

Typical always take from the kids & the everyday man.

I've heard nothing from my daycare and would have! I know that as of today centres lose there extra funding for having full qualified staff. I thought that was the only thing.

Some centres individually may pull out of the scheme now that their funding has been cut, but the govt has not announced retracting the 20 'free' hours. You will have to check with the preschool your child is enrolled at to see how the funding cuts affect you... its estimated most families will be paying $25-30 more p/week from today onwards... glad I chose not to go back to work cos that would be really hitting us hard right now!

That doesn't sound logical that those already enrolled would get to keep it, it would have to be there for everyone or for none.

ITA with Jazzy - how hard is it to realise that by the govt spending on kids education they will have a better, healthier, richer workforce in a few years!!

Oh, and I'm already grumpy about all the little news ads on tv saying National is talking about increasing GST again!!!

What increase GST again?? I have not seen the adds but every time I see the PM standing outside his million $$ home I want to puke.

I know a few at kindy who will not be able to pay the extra if it is increased....

Not every centre is going to increase by $80 a week, I think that was the maximum. On the news it interviewed the Little School in Wellington and I think they are increasing by $50 per week but they are generally a more expensive option than a Kindy.

I think the money should be spent more on primary and secondary schools rather than preschools.

I think it's the funding cuts which were announced last year come into force this month which means there may be increases in preschool fees.
I would be disappointed if the 20 free hours were scrapped as that is the only thing we get from the govt and had thought it was nice to at least get something! But I'm pretty sure that is not in the pipeline right now. Also, I think the GST was recommended by a report, not a govt announcement!

And with regards to John Keys house (sorry but I have to mention this) - all paid for by very hard work by someone brought up by a solo mum who wasn't wealthy. Not to mention that a significant percentage of his PM salary is donated to charity...

That would be my guess as well, they probably don't get as much funding for kids on 20hrs free

On the news last night that daycare centre said it wasn't all due to the funding cuts but also because they were below occupancy levels. So some daycares are using the funding cuts as a chance to bump their personal costs too. Shop around and find a daycare that suits.

It amuses me as to how politics always come into play with subjects like this and yet no one is willing to comment on the $400 million per week that the country has to borrow per week to support the bad judgements of the last government. And how much of it was kept under wraps. It seems to me that we are all like spoilt children who still want our pocket money even though our parents are going bankrupt.

Most centers will put their prices up, as theyre losing some funding, however - we've all known for months, so many are putting their prices up a small amount (across the board) so that it doesnt "hurt" families too bad.
Each center chooses how they do it.
The most affected are those that are keeping 80% or more of their teachers qualified.
