the karitane nurse at plunket gave me a list of foods that don't affect babies. YOu should be fine to eat these, then you can add to the list as you find things that have no affect as well
Root Veges (potato, kimera, beetroot, carrots, parsnip)
Pumpkin
Courgette
Green beans
mushtooms
pasta
tinned asparagus
vege soups (not tomato)
rice
lentils
sprouts
alfafa
eggs
breads
crackers
cheese
nuts
red skinned apples
pears
melons
tinned peaches/pears
stewed apples/pears
herbs not spices

One PLunket nurse told me that chocolate *might* upset the gremlins. I told her I'd given up dairy and eggs for them, they were not making me give up chocolate as well!

If anything I eat more chocolate now - I get such a craving! Other than that I just try to eat some protein at every meal and to drink up lots of water. And I eat more lamb/beef for the iron.

I think its a furphy that certain foods affect a baby fed through breastmilk. Afterall, do you think Indian mothers stop eating spices when they are breastfeeding??!!
I've eaten loads of spicy food etc while I've been breastfeeding to absoulutely no ill effect to my baby. On the contrary, when I eat a garlicky thing, she seems to love my milk even more and has always drunk more then :)
A friend of mine said you shouldn't drink carbonated drinks while breastfeeding as it gets into your milk and makes the baby more gassy!! What the?? Do the bubbles get into your bloodstream too? No? Well how do they get into your milk then??!!
I just think that restricting foods while breastfeeding is only going to make it seem much harder to some mothers and make them give up when they really don't need to.

You are very lucky to be able to eat everything. Some babies actually do get affected though.
SarahBeth, I also had to watch what I ate, onions, garlic etc. I only found this out when Brenna was 6 weeks old and when I cut out certain foods, I had a VERY different baby. She was much more settled and happy. I am pleased I made these sacrifices as it was worth it! I was so close to giving up b/f but pleased now that I made some changes and perservered. Well done for finding out that info! Not all babies are the same

I agree with Rubydooby, all babies are different and some react to foods in the mothers diet. All three of my girls have reacted badly to things in my diet, Maya was Fails to Thrive and had bleeding in her gut from dairy in my diet, and the gremlins screamed non stop and had chronic reflux from something in my diet, we were never able to identify the culprit, but as soon as they were weaned onto formula they settled within a week.
ETA: Spicy foods, garlic etc. never seemed to affect Maya tho

Some babies are fine, Jack however really reacts to soft drink, even a little bit the next day he is practically doubled over in pain and farting lots.
You are lucky you could eat/drink anything. I however have had to work on a process of elimination (actually addition), to see what foods don't have an effect on him.

Hannah had a constant nappy rash and eczema for about 9 months from the milk and egg in my diet.

We had issues with Garlic, Onions, Calli and Brocolli for a while. Has now resolved which is wonderful as I love garlic in my stirfrys.

Early on (up to about 6 months) I used to cut back on garlic, onions and fizzy drinks cause they seemed to really have an impact on Alyssa's wind problems. These days I pretty much eat whatever EXCEPT for pizza!! For some reason she is a total nightmare the day after I have pizza and every now and again I "test" to see if she has gotten over the reaction but it still happens. I'm happy to leave it out until I stop breastfeeding now..

tree tomatoes (tamarllos) make her poop! yes they do!!!
and i eat butter chicken a lot - no effect. Nor does chinese food but then i still ate a lot of both while preggers....maybe she is immune to them now...
