Topic: Lack of Education. Posted: 02 July 2007 at 5:56pm |
This fully disturbed me as my baby is the same age and I would never do this.
My stepmum is a nurse and told me a lady came in to the doctors with her six week old baby because he was unwell.
She had been feeding him weetbix and normal cows milk.
My stepmum said to her that she shouldn't give her baby either of those things and that babies tummies can't handle solids at six weeks and to definitely not give him dairy products.
The women then said 'That's ok, I will just give him yoghurt'.
My stepmum said 'Yoghurt is a dairy product!'
The women then rattled off a whole lot of other things that she had been giving not knowing that they not good for baby, ie: Custard baby food, other tinned baby foods, weetbix, cows milk, yoghurt, cheese.
Then after being told that none of these things should be given to a six week old baby, she said 'What would you know?!' to my Stepmum who has been a nurse for 20 years and has two children!
It saddens me about the lack of understanding about infant nutrition and I hope that she gets some help!

That is shocking! Baby food tins specifically state for 4mos+ (or more), and surely her mw would have been clear on that stuff before discharging her, not to mention Plunket!

Yeah I agree busymum, is it a case of lack of education or a case of not taking in the education given!?!

I think people tend to get defensive when they're called on their parenting practises, regardless of whether they are actually wrong or right. I remember my Plunket nurse telling me about a lady she went to visit and was horrified to see her rinse out a dirty bottle under the tap then make it up with tap water for her newborn, yet the woman didn't understand what the issue was.
That said, it's pretty sad that no one bothered to educate this poor woman on what NOT to do with her bub, I have a friend who fostered a wee girl at 6 months who has pretty severe allergies from being given solids too young and the wrong types of foods. Even now at 5 it still affects her

That is just plain scary! I am shocked to hear that there is a mother out there that doesn't know that a 6 week old baby doesn't eat solids full stop. I think she is very lucky the baby is still alive and hasn't choked to death on the food it has been given. And as Emma said I hate to think of the long term effects on this poor child!

In defence of plunket etc I wonder if the mother is actually going to them?? Or even told the midwife what she is feeding the child? Because it strikes me that if she told the dr's office to go jump she has probably also told plunket and her MW that.

having lived in south auckland most of my life I am afraid to say that this doesnt suprise me....nor does coke in baby bottles etc....
i think there is plenty of info out there for most things in life but of course it is up to individuals to access it - and there are pockets of society who choose not to...
or maybe she lives in east auckland where they have such a severe lack of plunket nurses etc that they DARED to TRY and cancel my appointment today and make it for 3 weeks from now (WTF!!!)- and maybe that mother was one who gave up on them - unlike me who is about to write a stinking letter about their services....oops now that is another thread!

Absolutely Paws. Like when Plunket told me to stop giving Briona water in a bottle at 8mos. I had already made up my mind and completely disregarded her advice.
Surely it's not lack of education though - IMO there's heaps around! - but why would she think that was ok???

That is really sad for the baby Situations like this really freak me out as Im applying to be a plunket nurse this month and coming across these sorts of situations or other neglect type ones worry me as I'll prob be a complete mess wanting to "save them all" . I guess in alot of cases tho education and support will go along way!

I was thinking more along the lines of some sort of screening process for potential parents... a test of sorts. Not sure how to implement it - will have to work on the finer details.

no more like a LICENSE to have sex! can you picture it at high schools "i just got my license!" "oh i failed mine 3 times before i got it" "i had to have lessons"
ahem, anyway... that is just so sad, i cant even comprehend how that sort of education doesnt get through. how hard is it? milk for babies, sheesh!
wow kels, good luck, you would make a fab plunket nurse. thats why alize is not letting you sleep, he is making you see what real sleep deprivation is like, so you can smpathise properly with your clients

OMG
But I did receive my baby (plunket book type thing) from my mum and at 2 months I was on solids, i'm wondering if she had some not so friendly advice from an older woman saying a baby should get the taste of solids early .
I do hope the baby is ok.
