Help me I'm at a loss at what to do with Jack. Jack has never been the best sleeper but about 2 months ago he started waking up in the middle of the night and would not go to back to sleep for at least 2 hours. We would go in there when he first then 10 mins later he starts crying again and the gaps just get smaller and smaller until he just cries and cries. If we get him up he falls straight to sleep in our bed or on the couch or anywhere theres people.

He pretty much has one week on of doing this and then one week sleeping right thru. Ive tried giving him paracetemol but it doesn't work hes not too hot or cold, theres no real pattern to when he wakes and when he doesn't. I feel terrible leaving him to scream but if I sit in there with him it lasts even longer.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do?

OMG rachel, you just described Taine. Except up until recently he was a good sleeper, so I'm a fat lot of good as I'm in the same boat. I am trialling him in a big boy bed today because he falls asleep on my bed really easily and I have noticed him getting appendages stuck in the cot. we'll see!

We've been having that too Rachel, its been going on for a couple of weeks now. The first time it happened he was awake to 2 hours we went in and gave him a cuddle, that didn't work so out came the paracetamol, that didn't work so I finally gave into a bottle two hours later and he went to sleep. All that other times its happened we have given him a cuddle and some paracetamol and he's been asleep within the hour making the odd noise in that time. There is no chance Lockie would fall asleep in our bed tried it and it didn't work. We seem to be getting one night he sleeps through the next he wakes. I'm picking tonight is going to be one of those nights.

I am thinking Lockie's problem is teeth as he has cut three molars all in one go so I kind of figure if he wakes up screaming he's in pain.

The other thing that has crossed my mind is perhaps it could be night time terrors too.

Could it be teeth? Or night time terrors?

Ahhh .. some sanity, or lack of, in a world of non sleepers! I have to say it's doing my head in, and 4 hours sleep for me the other night was just NOT on!

Hmm .. anyway, off track. Up until Amelia got a cold, then an ear infection, and now popping 2 teeth out, she has been a GREAT sleeper. In the past week I've been up at least once, usually more, each night. Sometimes she is awake for 2 hours. The other night she was up 2 hours, asleep for 40 mins, awake for another 40.
Last night she awoke at 12, went back to sleep by 12.30pm while being cuddled in a blanket, then awake 10 mins later for another 40 mins. That was a good night.

This is what I'm doing, and maybe you could try if you wanted:
She is going to bed with tights & PJ pants on. Plus a wool and cotton singlet underneath her PJ top. I have taken to putting a wool blanket on the TOP of the bottom sheet for extra warmth. We have a heater going all night in her room. She has one wool blanket on top PLUS a cotton duvet quad folded.
I have just discovered (well, pretty sure) she is scared of the dark, so the past 3 nights, we have had the hall light on (the nightlight hasn't been used in so long it needs a new bulb).
Last night, even though she felt warm I decided to pop a cardigan on AND put the hood up - it did the trick!

Good luck!
Selina

Man, sleep deprivation sucks doesn't it!
If my big boy wakes (my big 2 year old I will go in and make sure he's ok (ie: hasn't spewed or pooed) and then I leave and let him go back to sleep Some nights it takes him an hour of crying which sucks as I can't go back to sleep either but I don't want to get into habits I don't wish to keep (like getting him up!).
So I don't really have any other suggestions but to let him CIO??? xxx

Had a good night last night touch wood!! For some bizzare reason he woke after an hour of being in bed but a rub on the head soon put him back to sleep. We did however leave the hallway light on last night and he didn't wake at all. Don't know if its concidence or we should invest in a nightlight, as there is no way that tonight I am sleeping with it on as it really annoyed me big time and I kept waking up.

Marielb I can totally relate to not being able to go back to sleep I seem to hear everything. Yeah there is no way that I would leave the room with my boy, I give cuddle, kiss and then back to bed and its up to him to go back to sleep.

I think there is a possibilty its teeth cos we have had one molar pop thru. We have been giving him paracetemol before bed and when he wakes going in the first time and then leaving him to it. It was hard last night but I'm going to stick to it.

Its nice to know there are others in the same boat

Isn't it nice to know others are going through the same things! I always take solice (is that the right term!?) when I am up at crazy hours and I often wonder how many other mummies are doing the same things I am!!

Okay we did the nightlight last night and that seemed to work too although he did wake at the ridiculous hour of 5.40am (don't fancy getting up at that hour every morning). So not sure if the nightlight woke him up or not. It is under his cot but the light does still seem pretty bright. Mmmmm what to do. I'm still not ruling out that it was teeth.
