i can't help about genetic births but just wanted to say how cool that you are/were both preggers at the same time!
all births are different, try not to worry, as hard as that is!

Just remember that it's only one day!! And after that you'll have your brand-new baby in your arms!! Also, even if you have a lot in common, it doesn't mean that labour will be the same. I don't think genetics plays an overally large part in the birthing process, althgouh am guessnig a little here.

well when my mum was pregnant with me i was 2weeks over due then i was distressed and after 24hours of active labour they gave her a cesarean (sorry mum!)
when i had caitlyn i was in labour for 24hours but the first 12 were bearable,i progressed thru dilation quickly and misjudged my timing to the hospital arrived and i was pretty much ready to push so i had no pain relief and while it wasnt pleasent and it hurt it was very straightforward with no complications-the opposite of my mum.

One thing that helped me was instead of focusing on how much pain i was in thinking about how scary it must have been for my baby.
But yeah in the end labour doesnt last forever and ull be fine-just do whatever feels right for u

ooh poor you! I'm sure everything will be fine. I tried not to think too much about it, becasue, at the end of the day, baby has to come out, and you will have a beautiful son or daughter to show for all your hard work. I know its easier said than done, but try not to stress out about it too much All I can advise is try not to fight the pain, and don't be too scared to ask for pain relief! Good luck!!!

you'll be fine! stay positive!
i swore i was never going to have a child again, but the memory has faded so much that i'm looking forward to when i can have another one. (mind you, that's because i know it's going to be about 10 years away )

if all else fails, ask for drugs... lots of drugs....

(ok, only joking... kinda...)

I'm pretty sure how you give birth isn't genetic. My mum popped out four of us kids without any problems at all, with the longest labour being 8 hours (that was me).
I ended up with 31 hours of active labour ending in an emergency C-section.
I'm sure you will be fine NelsonChick. Don't think how hard it was for your sister, and try think how great it will be to finally meet your bubs!
Best of Luck!!

I agree with what everyone else has said. My midwife told me that they don't let you go longer than 12 hours in labour so when I started having contractions on the Wed afternoon I was excited thinking my baby would be here by the morning.

Not even! 41 hours later (the first 30-something at home), an epidural and some syntocinon later and baby finally arrived. They let me go so long because Maya wasn't distressed and the contractions were quite irregular. After 30+ hours I was only 5cm dilated. But after all of that, my 9lb baby flew out with no stitches, so yes the labour was hard, but the birth was a piece of cake.

Try not to stress too much about it, as that will make it harder for you. I was really worried prior to labour as we knew Maya was big and she was posterior presenting, but after all the worry, it wasn't so bad at all in the end.

Good luck, only a few more weeks till you can hold your baby!

My midwife told me tht if your mum had a quick easy birth, chances are, you will as well. My mums longest was about 6 hours, which was me, and mine was just under 10 hours from the water/show and hassle free. mine took a bit longer, because I had an epi at 7cm, which slowed things up quite a bit (I was able to have a good rest fo rthe hard bit), I'm sure it owuld have been faster i my blood pressure wasn't so high (hence the epi) and I wasn't suck a sooky (also why I had an epi!!)

I'm hoping not to follow in my mum's footsteps. I was 9 weeks prem, and my younger brother was 5 weeks prem. Apparently that can be genetic (although I don't think my mum or any of her 6 siblings were prem......) I'm hoping for a normal pregnancy, short labour and a 6lb bubba Although, I'd settle for a healthy baby

actually i think it hurt more having my little 6 pounder than it did my bigger 7lb.

types of birth differ for everyone depending on how big baby is, what position baby is in, whether you are active or not, what drugs you have during labour - every thing. out of 5 girls in my family....

sister #1, had long birth with first, short induced bith with the other - 7hrs

sister #2, had 32 hrs with first, 4 with second

sister #3, 5 hours with first child, last child it was down to about 1.5 hrs from wo to go
me, - i had a 5 hour and a 3 hour from first niggles to babe in arms
and my little sister had 1 kid by c setion and the next is scheduled c- section again.

everyone is different... just try and stay fit and healthy, keep as active as you can, and let gravity do the work in labour as much as possible.

I think to a certain extent births are genetic but half of your baby is from the dad's gene pool so that makes a big diff... From listening to my midwife mother warble on foryears I have learnt: second babies are generally 'easier' births but if it is a different dad the births don't follow the same pattern as the first one as the genetic makeup of bubba is different!

Anyway, my thoughts on the whole birthing process... it hurts like nothing else no matter how long the birth is, I had a 10lb baby in about five hours with no tears, according to the text books that is an easy birth but it still hurt. BUT at the end of it all, you get a baby which is worth any ammount of pain!! And already I have forgot that it even hurt and want to do it all again!!

Hehe! I know size has little to do with pain factor - but as a first time mum I'm still pretty scared about the whole deal! I'm focussing more on getting past the morning sickness right now, but I am becoming afraid I will be one of the unlucky ones who is sick all the way through I am getting the odd day of not vomiting, but am queasy 24/7. Ah well, only 22 more weeks to go.... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

Bailey has started his new med, not sure how it's really going yet as they are slowly increasing the dosages every few weeks. last time they were re-assessed the doc said he had gone from being the group of "2 - 4 months to live" to the next one up where it would be up to a year if he does really well..   still he's been in hosp since then with fluid accumulating round his liver etc again and dehydration.. sounds silly together but yeah.

sis is due late feb, but is scheduled for c-section at 37 weeks, or earlier is she starts getting higher BP cos it's already starting to skyrocket.. so yeah. Baby is another boy, and is being adopted out - to family friends... sis seems pretty positive about it.
