Topic: Chain letters Posted: 26 September 2007 at 8:53am |
Just wondering what everyone's views are on chain letters? We recently received one (as a couple of you know ) and one of the people we forwarded it to has just called me (the mum did) to say that because it's a chain letter, they're not interested. I know the old fashioned chain letters used to say things like "if you don't do xyz your head will be chopped off" or something along those lines, but I can't see what is objectionable these days? My mum used to be anti these when I was younger but only after a certain time, so I thought it was just that we didn't use to get the expected return lol

I have had a couple of good ones, where you pass on recipes or books.
My grandmother is very anti as she received one saying something will happen to someone who is travelling, and at the time my uncle was in Oz.
I hate email ones, they're annoying junk and clog up my in box.

i partici[pated in a sticker one for my kids and they got zip. was alittle disappointed for them, but they don't care really.
as for email ones - i ignore. i wouldn't bother calling to say no thank you. usually i plan to answer then just forget until a month later when i delete it.

I remember my mum being really anti them and so i would hide and copy them out to send them on. In theory they seem like a smart idea but people never follow through. I hate the ones that say if you don't pass this on you will have bad luck forever.

I've never recieved one on the post but I get them all the time through email, I just delete them and block the sender if I don't know them.
I don't like them, I think they play on people's fears that something terrible will happen if they don't send the letter on to 20 people yadda yadda

It's a waste of a bit of tree and 1 less minute sitting at my computer pressing delete. Chain mail of any kind should be banned.

I got the sticker one recently through the post. Couldn't be bothered doing it though and chucked it out! And I hate the email ones - like that stupid luck of the irish one that I must have received about 55 million times

I don't mind the email ones if they have something funny in them. I hate the text ones saying you will get $20 if you send it to so many people

I loathe chain letters, including the soppy story ones and warnings which tell you to forward it to all your friends (i.e. women getting kidnapped at the mall etc).. What especially annoys me is about the "warning" e-mails is that they have been around for years and years and often are American in origin, sometimes edited to include NZ details...
Totally gay.

Ok, so i think i'm the culprit here.. lol
In reality, i hate chain letters, i hate email ones i hate posted ones i never forward any of them, just hit delete. I share all of the same ideas of anyone else.
BUT...
I never actually considered the sticker one to be chain mail.. i suppose it is, however i do think it's pretty neat for what you put in and with that type of thing it's dependant on who you send it out to (we only sent to people who we knew would probably embrace it for what it was.. something fun for the kids), I do find it hard though with the idea of the sticker club one for the kids as it's not the people you send it to that you have to worry about it's whether the people they in turn send it to are gonna go through with it. so guess with that type of thing it's up to your friends you send it to, to pick others who they think will embrace that whole idea too.
It's hard. But i must say, I think the idea of stickers through the mail.. even if it's just 1 pack.. I think that's worth it enough for us to do it.

Yeah I mean Kobe loved getting his own letters and the people i sent it to (mainly family memebers) all made sure they sent it to people they knew would do it and I know my neice only got a couple back so i went and brought her some stickers which cost me all of $2 and posted them to her and she was stoked. I think the joy they got from even receiving a couple of letters/stickers back was totally worth the hassle. Well except I found stickers all over the house for weeks after which is why i put them away!

I hate chain mail, And i think the sticker one is so wrong targeting kids. My kids received the sticker one 3 or 4 times from various people. The first time we got it i posted stickers to the two children that were already on the list so they wouldnt really miss out but phoned the parent i knew and said what i had done. The other times i just binned them. Grrrr
