 Topic: Angry at the police!

Been having problems with a big group of about 12 youth hanging around our house frontage. The other day I heard banging and looked out the window to see youths trying to trash our real estate signs so I banged on the window and yelled at them to piss off but they all laughed at me and then I heard stones being thrown at my windows... It was just my son Jaxon and I home so it was pretty scary and very intimidating.. I rang my neighbour and she said she is going to ring the police... Rang the police three times and they said they do have other jobs to do! we are not the only people needing their help... Makes me so angry.... and about half an hour later a different lot of people thatlive behind us were having a big piss up and arguing.. Had big domestics and one guy climbed up a power pole... IDIOT!!!! anyway he fell and then our neighbours called the poilce again cos it was almost in their place where this guy fell and the big fights were happening and about 10 mins if that there were 4 police cars and 2 ambos.... .... What a day... I just want to sell this house.... Im sick of these kids hanging around and destroying our property. It just gets me in tears.... I dont feel safe and forever on edge... We arrived home tonight to find one of our signs had been almost torn off is posts... so they must have been at it again... argh!!!!!!!!!

ps I dont think i mentioned the whole moral of the story,
the police never turned up for my incident, that is why Im so angry at them. It could have got worse....

 You're angry and rightly so. Write a (nicely written) letter of complaint.
Add in the letter somewhere something like: Ask them to improve their service and telephone manner, and explain that you felt unsafe. You rang the police in trust and for you, that trust in the police force has been broken. "What are you going to do about repairing that broken trust?" Maybe remind them that they need all the good publicity they can get lately.
I hate it when the public servants don't do anything, like they are supposed to.

I can understand how you feel with what happened, but I don't think ragging on the police force as a whole is going to do much - not all cops are negligent. Definitely write a letter of complaint to your local watchhouse though!

That is true ErinMama. Ragging the police force is probably too much. I hear what you're saying about not all cops are negligent...just the ones I've had to deal with. 
I'm approaching it like: I want the police force to improve. Things like what kellverona said really get to me, because the police are here to protect and serve. When you get a telephone reply saying "We are too busy to help you because we have other things to do," when they don't respond to a cry for help, situations often escalate. When people call the police it's usually because they are genuinely concerned about something. Even if the police don't actually DO anything at the situation, just having a cop car turn up can defuse a potentially violent situation. 12 youths getting smarmy isn't something to joke about these days - especially when there is only 1 woman and child at home.
I think you get my point so I'll stop ranting here. Even though I could say quite a bit more.

I have a police story too, my mum was home at her house, my sis lived in the sleepout, my mum heard noise down there (2 storey house) and seen 3 guys burgling her room, my uncle who was living there two went out and caught one of them and they him into the corner and told my mum to call the cops, it was friday night and they said they are too busy and will come round tomorrow.. my uncle had to let the guy go. And they all had golf clubs, which could have been considered as home invasion!
i think its appalling that they can say that sort of stuff to you, no wonder people are taking it into their own hands.

actually I don't think it is the police, rather than the call centres. Mum was asked by the cops to ring when the next door enighbours started hooning. so she did, and she was ringing for ages, no reply. then rang the actual station in Palmy. then 11 rang her and asked her to stop calling as she was jamming the lines. she said she had called once and got no reply and they argued with her - and this was before finding out what was even happeneing. the call centre I believe is the one at fault in many cases - the cops just show up at what they are told to.
Must also say I loved the police for their treatment of me and jake last weekend - although sunday afternoons hopefullly wqere slow times anyway

Sorry to say but it's definetly not the police...I've been out in the field with them and I've seen the number of 111 calls they take,they have to priortise and sadly that does mean that even though what is urgent to you may not be able to take priorty over something else.
it really sucks that we don't have enough good cops in the country, staffing levels are low there is no doubt about that. It's a tough job alright.
Same with the call centre, they are overworked no doubt about it...again unfortunately there are so many calls made and I'm not sure there is enough to staff to handle it. From what I hear it is the toughest call centre in the country....4 month turnaround on staff due to the stress. (and yet still I intend to apply but then I intend to be a cop!)

Kellverona - that is something you should NOT have to go through at all, no matter what the police workload is like.
I had a knife held to my throat and my car smashed up by our neighbours when I was flatting, turned out they were high on P and thought we were playing loud music (it was 11.30 and I was taking 3 people to town as I was the sober one). The guy hit 3 of my guy mates, tried smashing the windows in my car with his fists (while we were in it), the woman smashed it up with an axe then came at me with a knife. My friend got a shell necklace ripped from her neck which caused her to have a massive scar.
What did the cops do? They came in about 10 mins but didn't take me seriously, told me they'd press charges etc etc. The people were arrested and let out on bail on the condition they stayed at their residence (um... across the street from us!). All they got was the woman was done for damage to property (with a stick apparently) and ordered to pay half of what it cost to repair my car (being on the dole often gets you out of paying for a lot of things apparently).
Same cops came when we had a car stolen from outside our house, they came in and questioned us etc, then said that we were asking for it because it was a crappy car.
My dad got done for assault because a guy came onto our property and wouldn't leave no matter how much we told him to, he then got a friend of his to push dad, he pushed back and the cops believed the other guy. Wouldn't any father try and get a crazy man off their property when his kids and nieces and nephews were there?
IMHO the NZ Police force spend way too much time collecting tickets and not enough time actually protecting its citizens. As you can tell, I'm not a fan, and never will be.

I personally think some of the police are police because they like the power and aren't nice to anyone, so then people lose respect for them and the people who would actually do a really good job don't want to apply anymore because they get no respect.

Kellverona - do you have a community constable that you could call and have a chat to. It might be good to explain to them what has been happening and then next time you call for help - you might find that you get a better repsonse. I dont know but its worth a try.
Still - its pretty sucky that they didnt come and help, we had a similar situation a few months ago where our neighbours at the time were partying in their back garden and were p*ssed as anything, and really noisey. At 3am DH finally yelled over the fence for them to quieten down, and then they came banging on our front door screaming and shouting that they were going to "f*cking* kill him....I was pregnant and terrified, and we rang 111 to tell them we were being threatened and what was going on - we were told that it didnt sound like we were in any danger as they werent actually in our house (even though they were on our property) and that they wouldnt come. We spent the rest of the night absolutley terrified that they were going to smash their way in and really hurt us - we locked ourselves into the spare room and didnt sleep a wink!! Its awful to feel scared and have the people you are supposed to go to for help wont / cant help you.

I would be pissed off too. Its so scary to think that the police may not always be there to help in a bad situation. I am a single mum living alone with my children and it makes me feel even more scared to think I wouldnt have them here to help if I needed it urgently. I swear if anyone entered my house at night to thieve etc I would attack them with whatever I could get my hands on. There is no one more murderous than a mother protecting her young!!!

I can complain too much tho, my landlord is a cop so if I got nowhere with the call centre (where his wife works) I would ring him. He lives 10mins away but Im sure would have access to the eye cars in the area.
