DH and I are quite keen to use MCN's for our baby, but it doesn't seem to matter how much reading I do on them, I cant work out what is best to get for us. the pocket system seem to be the way to go, with maybe a few AIO's

We will have another baby after this one...
We are on a rather tight budget...

I saw peapods at the baby factory today and they seemed to be the cheapest of all the pocket nappies and also included the inserts. Is there something wrong with them?

What would you recommend for us? sizes?
I want something that is easy to use, and absorbant!

Any help would be much appreciated :-)

Nothing wrong with Peapods. I had a few when I first started out and had no issues with them. As to the rest of the questions i'll leave them for people with a lot more knowledge than me.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Do you still use them? Did you get small or medium? how did you find the sizing?

I got the small size - they still fit him round the waist the rise is too small for him now. If I had some spare $$$ I'd get a couple of the mediums.

The sizes are big. The only thing with them is the inserts need to be washed heaps of times to become absorbant.

some people find peapods excellent, come dont. its all about your babies size etc...

but i would suggest that maybe you get a hire kit so you can trial diff types and brands of newborn/small nappies. i think greenbeans do them and the nappy network and also fuzzi bunz do one but it is only that brand of nappy.

that is probably quite a wise suggestion GandT, but to be honest with you, I kind of don't want to piss around with hiring (can I say that word on here?). It seems relatively easy to put them on TM if they don't suit...or here for that matter.

Trouble is, I currently have no baby (still cooking) and no nappies to see (no friends or family use MCNs) apart from the peapods. Im in Hawkes Bay so no agents or shops that have them. So I guess its sort of like buying clothes for a kid you haven't seen    I just thought that their might be a few brands that are consistantly good (absorbant, good price) with a range of babies.

Does that make sense?

JD, that makes complete sense. I was the same, didn't see the point in hiring when I could just buy them!

To be honest we didn't find the Peapods good. I liked the price but had constant leaks so ended up getting rid of mine after a few weeks. They are not THAT much cheaper than alot of the other brands out there anyway. I have a range of pocket nappies. Fuzzis, honeychild, tweedles, drybees, Bumgenius + a few others. I find them all fantastic although honestly my personal preference is the fuzzis/honeychild nappies.   The Tweedles are quite cost effective and you can get some great looking nappies in a choice of velcro or snaps. Check out www.tweedles.co.nz. I know Rachel has some great package deals on there as well.

JD - if you check on The Nappy Network there may be someone around your area that can come give a demo. I know there are plenty of women out there willing to show off naps! In fact, I'm doing on this morning

I'd not recommend a whole set of peapods. Get one or two if you are looking to try them out. And as Sterryn said, there are cheap cost effective NZ naps out there.

If you are looking for something with a proven track record, then fuzzis would be the way to go. I'd extend this to Honey Child naps as well even though they've only been out a short while as they look to be of the same level of quality (well better... but then the price tag matches that)

I really would suggest a demo and hire kit. It's not really that difficult... you sign up, they send it, you have it for around 8 weeks, use the nappies, see which ones work for you and then buy a whole lot yourself. The advantages are that by then your babe is fitting the small size quite well and you don't have to worry about getting a newborn size in between.

Hope that helps a little!

We found peapods useless. The fit on them was ok, the PUL fabric we found was not totally waterproof. Peapods in aussie was great though and sent me replacements however those still had PUL fabric that had the same problem. So I've got rid of all mine.

Tweedles are a good if you are on a budget because they are pretty cheap. But have you thought of giving nappy making a go? I've recently had a go after not really doing anything sewing wise (other than the odd repair) for years and it's not too difficult

Ok this is a 'newbie' post in that I have no baby yet so you old hands at MCNs may have better ideas but what I've done is get some prefolds and covers (as they're cheap and not hard to use) and 6 small fuzzis as well and I'm also getting 12 OSFA Bum Genius.

I figure that I'll use the whole gamit to start with when the baby needs heaps of changes and then as the baby gets bigger I'll use the prefolds as additional liners. The small fuzzis last until baby is up to 6 months (depending on size) and the bum genius should last much longer.

I like pockets for the ease of use and portability but I have come around to prefolds. They're a good backstop for around home I reckon especially given that you can get a pack of six prefolds and a cover for the same price as a pocket nappy.

Bobbie - I think you are right on the money. I'd definitely do that if I had my time again.

And JD - most prefolds are created equal. Snazzipants have some cool unbleached prefolds. But as far as covers go, I have only heard great things about bummis whisper wraps (also available on Snazzipants site). Their fleece covers look good too.

Yeah I got prefolds from Snazzipants - just the white ones though I did like the unbleached (but the white ones were cheaper).

I also got a bummi polar wrap? (I think) and will be going back to get some whisper wraps on Sat.

when charli was small we started on covers and prefolds. they are very cost effective and easy to use. not so much on a wriggly older bub though prefolds are also great for stuffing into pockets.

we have used alot of different pockets..peapods, joel-eze, fuzzi's, baby harmony, tweedles, mommys touch, swaddlebees...whew!!   i like them all, but i'd recommend tweedle and peapods for price, then baby harmony. peapods were one of the first nappies i tried and we've never had any probs with them. charli was wearing sz small up til a month ago so they last ages! depending on your baby of course.

i am different from alot of mcn users and don't really like fuzzi's so i wouldn't recommend getting them, but it's a personal choice.

Hi JD, I can only offer my experience so far but here goes....

I purchased a "special delivery" package from snazzipants before bubs was born and it has about 18 prefolds, 1 fleece cover (which I love) and 3 bummis whisper wraps. I also purchased a couple of joel-eze pockets and a couple of swaddlebee pockets and an all in one from swaddlebee. oh and a mummys touch.

At first I liked the joeleze but at the moment he seems to be at a funny size and I cant quite work out how to get them to fit right. I didnt get on wel with the swaddlebees at all!! leakes everytime!

The prefolds have been brilliant. I dont do them with a snappi (too confusing for me). I just fold in 3 and put in wrap and I found the fleece wrap so good I bout 2 more. Prefolds are the most economic I think and I am tempted to keep going with them as he gets older as it is sooooo damn easy. But I am still trying others.

I bought a bubblebub AIO and it rocks! and I am tempted by the bum genius OSFA naps.

Hope this helps. Oh and my boy was 7lb5 at birht and is now 10lb and I started using them from 1 week and they are still fitting.

JD where in the Hawkes Bay are you?? Would you ever come over to Palmy?? If so maybe some of us Palmy mums can meet up with you over here and we can bring along some of our nappies to show what there is.

I agree with Nikki. If you have no official agents in your area then get onto the Nappy Network or even on here and ask who is local and has a good range of nappies to show you. Shame you're not in Auckland as I think Emma has 2 of every nappy for sale in NZ! LOL
It's always better to hear about the pros and cons of a nappy from someone who has actually used them on their own child

As for Peapods. I've only ever trialled one and that was part of my training for being a Honey Child Agent. I really didn't like the fit on Caitlin or the hemp inserts as I found they got really smelly when wet with pee
Also, as an Agent, I've had quite a few customers buy Fuzzis or HC nappies who started with Peapods because they were cheaper but found they didn't perform as well as they had hoped, so sold them on and invested in a more expensive but better performing nappy. I've also had the same comments made from people using the Snazzi Pants fitted and whisper wrap system.

Choosing an MCN is a very personal thing where you have to look at the cost and the quality of the product and the ease of use for you. If you're having more than 1 child then look at the cost of the nappy over the nappy life of both (or more) kids, not just this baby.

We bought the Fuzzi system as we knew we wanted to have more than 1 child and we knew people that were using them on their 3rd child and they were still going strong from when they used them on their first child. So we didn't mind paying the extra as we knew we would save in the long run.
This was back when they were still the high quality USA made FBs, I refuse to sell the Mexican made ones because they are cr@p

The good thing about our Honey Child nappies is that they really are a no risk purchase, you can buy your pack of nappies (or a trial) if you find you really don't like them you can return them for a refund within 30 days, so there's no messing around with having to sell them on Trade Me

JD, where in HB are you? I am in Dannevirke, and I might be coming up that way on Saturday. I have quite a few different brands and all the different types if you want to have a look. KiwiMummy on here lives in Napier and she has quite a few nappies as well.

In case you are interested here is the link to the hire kit page from the nappy network.
