Topic: Green Vegetables Posted: 04 September 2007 at 10:12pm |
...how do you get them into your kids?
Elle doesn't eat much so it's hard to get all the food groups in. Finger food still goes very determinedly onto the floor although we did have great success with Aria Farm beef chips today.
I make her food most days but so far the only winners are pumpkin...with pumpkin and MAYBE a little bit of mince. She likes cans / tins of baby food so perhaps it's my cooking lol.
Green vege get spat out in disguist as does corn, tomato and carrot (Daddy is very proud as he hates corn too...LOL). Interestingly enough I couldn't stand green things when pregnant but made myself eat them for Elle's sake. I adore healthy food so just assumed my baby would be the same.
Any tips?

Not strictly correct, but if my preschoolers are eating fruit I don't get too anxious on veges (but still dish up a small portion every night). And vice versa if we had a non-fruit lover like me some time (might be Kryssi at this rate lol).
But I have a friend who mulies her veges up (like baby food) and mixes them into yoghurt for her 2yo. And a lot of near-2yos like frozen peas, but not cooked peas, so that's another thing to try.

my kkids LOVE peas, cooked and frozen. I used to put los of green veges "hidden" in things. but now the kids are older, i just offer, and don't make a big deal if they don't eat them. that said, i have two good eaters. (i know i sound smug - any consilTION, I had two kids in bed last night not sleeping)

I don't have experience cooking for kids but I have years of practice cooking for my DH
My suggestion would be hiding them ie grate veggies into tomato based sauces or mix into mince when making meatballs/lasagene/meatloaf. What about soups? Cream of borccoli soup or pea soup are yummy. Or mix into tomato based stews and hide them that way.
Mince is a really hiding place I find because you can put anything with it and it will still taste nice!

I have one good vege eater and one fussy eater.
Benjy will eat pretty much anything as long as its small enough and esp if its mixed in with other flavours like casserole or sauces.
Ella is still very fussy, and like Liz, I keep on serving them up and try not to make a big deal if she doesn't eat them. (Luckily she loooooves fruit)
I also do what yummymummy suggested and grate veg into minces, pasta etc so that she doesn't notice it there. Works a treat, and its hardly any extra work!
BTW- Ella also only like canned baby foods, she actually refused all solids in any form until she was over 9 months old, and even then it was very, very gradual.
Benjy wasn't a huge fan of my homemade food until it became 'proper food' not baby stuff

Han went through a stage of loving spinach, just lightly cooked and then dumped unceremoniously on her highchair tray. She just squished most of it but I do maintain some went into her mouth!!

I will puree some of it and just put it over pasta like a sauce. Even if she scrapes it off some of it will get in.
Other way is to make soup. Great way to get it in. But dont let the soup look too green. How about a pumpkin and spinach soup?
McKayla use to love her broccoli. Not so much anymore. But I cut it up real fine. Dont cook it at all and then put it raw in the pasta and then in the oven. She picks the broccoli and eats that. (but wont eat it lose on her plate. )
How about raw veggies cut up really thinly and some dips? Or how about making a pizza and let her put some veggies on it? Make faces or something? I got McKayla involve in some of the preparing of food after 12 months and she loves to eat the food then. (great way to get stuff in they dont normally like at all.)

Jack went thru a stage of only eating fruit so i used to put brocolli in with his stewed apples. I know it sounds gross but he could never taste it.

Yeah I mix fruit and veg sometime. She doesn't do finger foods or textures (well, she will do sammies and bisuit type things but nothing slimy like pasta or fruit or veggies) so chunks are no good. I have a mini blender but it doesn't do smooth puree which is probably good otherwise I'm sure we'd still be having to puree everything.
I bought a can of potato, pea and broccoli, mainly as a joke but she loved it! Cheeky wee thing...I reckon she's just having me on

I am sooooooooooo completely down with the whole trying to get my wee man to eat veges thing.
I just lost the plot earlier today when I'd heard he had refused his lunch because he saw a pea in it.
He's about his height for his age and eats fruit no problem at all - I don't know why I'm fretting at this all the time I just feel like such a failure and that it's my fault for being a lazy cook when - I was working long hours I wouldn't have time to puree up veges so he would get what was quick and easy and 9 times out of 10 there were no veges other than fries or beetroot (which he used to eat as well but has since stopped.)
I'm at my wits end and feeling miserable - I've been to the supermarket today and bought some cucumber and some cheese dip - will go home tonight and make up some veges for dip and try that - or if all else fails, just get over it and keep trying till he decides to eat them!

This may be a bad thing (but it works for me!), I let Charlotte eat things from my plate. More often than not, she is really interested in what I have and I find that she eats more of everything if she thinks she is getting something special, ie Mum's food.

Yeap I've tried that too - I've tried hiding pureed veges in his apple puree today instead of yoghurt, so we'll see what happens!

When Maya was about Fabian's age I used to dice silverbeet up and boil it in a pot with rice. She loved (and still loves) rice, and she'd usually even eat the silverbeet, but even if she picked the silverbeet up, some of the nutrients have been absorbed into the rice during the boiling process so she was still getting some of the goodness of it.
I second the raw veges idea too, even now she loves raw carrot, cherry tomatoes (yet she won't touch sliced big tomato), raw capsicum (but doesn't like it cooked) cucumber slices...

both my kids like brocolli just buy itself and also grated cheese, carrots. I have started giving addison corn on the cob cos it keeps her busy and is easy for her to eat herself and she loves it. both will eat raw carrots but not cooked which is the same as me.

My nephew loves to pick the herbs and veges from my garden - I have to watch him as he doesnt understand when they arent ripe (he is 2 1/2). But maybe thats a good summer project for some of the older kiddies - plant their own special tomatoe plant or lettuce or something - they can water it each day and then they get to eat them when they are ready!

Well hellelujah! I hid about 2 teaspoons of pureed vege (brussell sprouts, cauli, carrot, spinach) in a little tub of apple puree, just spoke to his daycare and he ate the lot!!!!!!
You should have seen the smile on my face! I'll try it tonight in his spaghetti and see what happens (let's hope he doesn't cotton on to what mummy is up to!).
He'll eat beetroot from time to time - have tries corn on the cob a few times - time for mummy to get more creative and persistant!
