Topic: Awake too much??? Posted: 16 November 2007 at 5:28pm |
Tom has changed the rules on me again! He now has HUGE day sleeps (3hours) and then wants to be awake for 3-4 hours!!!!!! He is only little! But he doesnt seem tired and is still sleeping normally (for him) at night.
Our days have been recently like this....
6am Wake and feed
7am Totally buggered....back to sleep
10am I start making noises in his room to wake him....feed
1pm Why is he not tired???? Feed and then try to get back to bed. He naps on and off till about 4pm
4pm WIDE AWAKE
7pm Bed!!
10pm feed
3am feed
7am start all over again.
Today we went to the show and lost track of time. We went 4.5 hours between feeds!!! I felt awful.
What do you think???

We went 4.5 hours between feeds when we went to the parent and child show when Spencer was 10 weeks so don't worry about that.
If he is happy when awake I wouldn't worry about it.

Daniel is quite weird when hes tired, he doesn't yawn anymore which can be hard to tell when hes actually tired. Have you tried putting him down earlier just to see if he is tired?

I'm having the same trouble, Nikki...Bella is somewhere between 2 and 3 naps now, and can stay up for 2 hours easily without showing any tired signs. I think you just have to go with it...if Tom seems happy with it all, then I'm sure it is fine

He is usually still smiling and giggling away. When he is tired he loses concentration and wont make eye contact etc. We arent getting this. He seems almost hyper!!
Well its only been a few days so lets see how things go.

When bubbas get overtired their bodies get flooded with adrenalin so his "hypnerness" could be as a result of that maybe.

Do you like to feed every 3 hrs, is it a routine for you and Tom? I just wondering because you say that you start to make noises to wake him. Why not just let him sleep till he wakes up?

Hey nzpiper, one of the things they do when tired which can be easy to miss and hard to explain is that they jig about a bit then kind of stare out into space then jig about again without actually really looking tired. (god I hope that doesn't sound mad)
Is there anything he does when tired that you could use as a test?
With Spencer if I'm not sure if he's tired I pick him up and if he is he rubs his face into my shoulders and if he isn't he just looks around, is a good way for me to test if he isn't giving any signs but he has been up for while.
Edit - cos I can't spell or write properly

Forgot to add that Xanda use to ball his fists up, and have clenched fists, that was his main tired sign.

I'm not seeing any of his normal tired signs. Mind you...like I said, he has changed the rules. Perhaps he's got "big boy" tired signs now. Must keep mummy on her feet

Ella doesn't rub her eyes or yawn either while she is playing- normally I have to remove her from all stimulation and only then will she show me that she is tired. Maybe after 1 - 1/2 hrs try putting him in his cot and see what he does.
I was told by plunket that at 4 months babies shouldn't be up for more than 1 1/2 hrs, 5 months 1 hr 45 and 6 months 2 hrs.
just when you think you have got it sussed, they seem to change the rules on you

nzpiper if hes happy to be awake that long and then has a decent sleep after I wouldn't worry. Whats the point of spending half an hour trying to get him to sleep when hes happy to be awake and playing. Some babies are more awake than other.
