    Posted: 07 December 2007 at 2:36pm

Seriously my friend has kinda upset me.

She came around and saw that we had dug another garden up for veges and that what I have already planted is getting ready to pick and eat. She told me I was a hippy for liking my vege garden.

Then she came around yesterday and saw that I had burnt the bottom of my big pot and asked what I had done and I told her I had made some tomato sauce and called me a hippy again as I was making sauce for myself and that we have pickled our own onions.

She has already made a comment about me using cloth nappies and that i'm turning into a hippy with my cloth nappies and vege garden.

Now I don't think I am as I see my nappies as saving me a heap of money (she still has a boy in sposies and its costing her a bit for them - this is her 4th year of buying sposies - 2 children) and my vege garden will also save me money as I won't have to buy veges very soon as I'll be eating the stuff I have grown.

Am I seeing a bit of jealousy??

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Meh - hippy is one of those terms people use to describe anyone doing anything the least bit eco -friendly or money saving...or so it seems to me. (and imagine the horror I endure when people find out I use a mooncup and cloth pads)

In the end, we get the last laugh...we're the ones saving money etc etc. For that reason I wear my "modern hippy" badge with pride!

BTW care to share the tomato sauce recipe? I never thought of making my own.

I haven't told her I have some cloth pads yet that will go down well.

I'll PM you that recipe if you like.

I'd do it just for the shock value!

In the end you are the one who goes to the supermarket and doesn't have to buy nappies and pads and I'm guessing wipes etc...and I always love pointing that out to people when they start going "ohhhhhh you're such a hippy earth mother type aren't you???"

And yes please to the recipe!

She's probably more upset that you are taking the effort and energy and saving yourself some money in the process...seems she is choosing the lazy and costly way. I wouldn't say hippie at all..more crafty and ingenious

And BTW, if I owned my own place I would love to put a vege garden in

People also call me a hippy for using cloth nappies etc I don't really mind most of my friends are from the alternative nature anyway and all the other's know we do it to save money.

It does seem by your post though that you friend is a bit Jealous I would tell her about the cloth pads just to see the look on her it would be priceless lol.

I use cloth nappies, have a vege garden, and heaps more...

I care about the environment and saving money - if that makes me a hippy so be it.

I think she might have a case of the green eyed monster - what you are doing with your garden takes skill and effort.

Sounds like your garden is worth being jealous over! It sounded amazing (when u asnwered my gardening Q's!). Good on you! I think your doing a fab job! There are soo many benifits, other than the obvious ones of saving money,..how cool for your kids to be involved, and see how things grow. Be proud of your efforts!

As for cloth nappies,...they rock! I dont diss people for using disposables, but I do go on about how great cloth nappies are to my yet-to-be-converted friends!

Just grin at her each time and say - yup, and proud, peace man.

Maybe she is worried you are going all earth mother on her so you will have less in common and won't want to hang out?

Be proud of what you are doing - I love going on about how much stuff like that we do and how much money it saves us! I get annoyed when people make comments like that, but I guess I get the last laugh at the end of the day and I get to feel good about what I'm doing. I would defiitely tell her about the cloth pads!

Can you post the tomato sauce recipe as that is why I am growing tomatoes - we dont eat them otherwise.

Yeah you're so lucky you can have a vege garden - I'd say a bit of jealousy is lurking there. I would totally tell her about the pads - I grossed my sister out when she found out I had a keeper.

I call people hippies but mean it in a nice, friendly, kinda hassling way. I call myself a hippy - you know - tuning in to my inner hippy. I wouldn't have taken offense to be honest but there might have been something in her tone that was a bit nasty so I guess I don't know what i'm saying

ROFL!!

Does she work? Maybe she's jealous as to how much time you have to do the garden etc? Or maybe she hasn't come across MCN, vege gardens before.

If she is a friend, surely she's not being mean or jealous (otherwise you wouldn't be her friend if she was that kind of person would you?)..Maybe she's just joking around? You can usually tell if it's said in a vindictive way or not.

Anyway, I guess only you know what she's usually like, but I know I'm very much a jokey person who likes to take the piss.. It would make me laugh if someone thought I was jealous of them just because I was being a smartass

Tell her you prefer the term 'Earth Mother' the new term for someone who takes the time to make food for their children, rather than get it out of a bottle or a can.

Personally I'm jealous of you, wish my vege patch was as lush as yours. and I had time to make homemade tomato sauce and pickled onions.

Does she have children of her own?
I'll be using MCN's for the economic factor as much as the cuteness.

Meh, doesn't sound to me like she was even being mean!  Was she saying it in a disdainful way or just having a joke?  I know someone who laughs at her 'earth mother' friend plenty and it's just because her friend cracks her up with her hippy ways... nothing mean about it though.
