Topic: Worried about Jack Posted: 20 December 2007 at 10:17pm |

Jack got a runny nose last monday (not the one just been the one before) and then a cough followed that. On the Weds night he woke up vomiting quite bad. He was vomiting every 5 mins and we ended up taking him to a and e. We took him to the dr the next day and he seemed to think the cold and vomiting was related. On Friday he was still vomiting and we all caught it too so I don't think it was related to the cold since we didn't get the cold. Jack still had diarhhoea on Sat and Sunday but was normal by Monday.
When his vomited stopped his cold came back and on sunday afternoon he was coughing and this gross stuff came out and then this great big vomit. He was acting totally normal (not sick like he had been any other time he vomits) and acted normal after. This has continued about once day a day since that, vomiting after coughing but not acting sick and no diarhhoea. I took him back to the dr on mon (because a rash came but thats gone now) but again he just said it was all related and he should be better soon.
I'm quite worried because hes lost heaps of weight and is still vomiting over a week later. I don't think its his tummy making him sick but more his coughing. Has anyone else ever had this sort of thing and what was it? I'm taking him back to the dr tomorrow but I'm worried hes just going to tell me its nothing. Am I being silly?

The only time Hannah has coughed so much she has vomited is when she had a chest infection - I'd get it checked again.

That sounds quite freaky but if his rash has come and gone I'd be inclined to wait another day or two because the worst is probably (hopefully!) over.
I really hope you guys get a nice and healthy Christmas

When they cough it can cuase them to bring up any mucus they have in their chest from a cold or infection. I wouldn't worry too much about that as it is better in than out but I would be thinking that it could be a chest infection causing it so going back to the dr wouldn't hurt.

I had this almost exact thing happen a while ago! I got a vomiting bug and threw up quite a bit for a couple of days- then caught a cough and even though I wasn't sick like I was with the bug, when ever I coughed really badly I vomited. It was like my body was so used to vomiting that it started to do it too easily and the coughing was triggering it. It went once my cough got better.
Don't think you're being silly especially since he's losing weight. Even if the Dr tells you the same thing at least you'll feel better knowing. Hope he gets better soon!

That would worry me as well. If you think your doc will say that its related blah blah blah then take him somewhere completely different and get another opinion.

Keep taking him back, my dr said he would rather see the boys 10 times and them to be fine than that 1 time and they are really really sick.

They gave us Phenergan to stop his vomiting. He doesn't have a chest infection or anything but the dr still didn't seem to worried since he is keeping some food and drink down although he did say vomiting for this long was quite unusual.
We saw not our normal Dr again and I don't think he usually sees kids cos he didn't really seem to know what he was on about. I asked him how long to give it to him and he said finish the bottle which I though seemed strange from what I've heard about Phenergan. My nurse Mil said it stops working after day 3 anyway and can cause hallucinations and will make him drowsy so I decided to give him 2ml (they prescribed 5-10ml) just before bed for 2 days and hopefully that settles his tummy enough. He hasn't vomited since so I'm hoping this is the end of it.
Thanks for everyone reassuring me
