Topic: heart beat? Posted: 21 February 2006 at 11:42am |
Does anybody know from how many weeks would a doctor be able to hear a heart beat through their listening instrument - would it be too early to hear at 8 or 9 weeks?

My m/w told me at my first appt, when i was 11 weeks, not to freak out if we couldnt hear it with the doppler. Apparently its totally normal to not hear it until 13-14 weeks. In saying that, like everything else we are all different and they might be able to hear it now, just dont panic if they cant yet.

8 or 9 probably would be too early. Mine wasn't heard at 12 weeks, although he did give it a go and he said the same as aimeejoys midwife - not to panic because baby is still only a few inches long!

My midwife said she usually tried from 9 weeks, but not to panic if we couldn't find it. They found my bubs at 12 weeks but took about 5 minutes to get it, I was freaking out!

They can pick up the heartbeat on u/s from about 6 weeks, but like the others have said, with a doppler it is usually closer to 14. That said, my m/w picked up Maya's heartbeat at 11 weeks.

At my 38 week appointment it still took my midwife a minute to find my baby's heartbeat with the doppler - and 38 weeks is considered full term!

Yup definately not able to hear any heartbeat until your 12th week minimum. So just hold out a little longer...
