    Posted: 30 January 2008 at 4:27pm
I can feel my milk let down but in one boob it doesn't seem to be working like it used to and I always have to offer the other one first or Caprece can't get any milk out of broken side, this has been going on for a few months. In the past few days she hasn't even been able to get much out even when I offer it second and so she gives up. Now that boob is getting all lumpy and I have to express it off in the shower but she still can't/won't get any milk out of it.
Anyone had something similar? What did you do?

TIA

I had the exact same problem Rach. My left boob just didn't seem to have let down and Benjy wasn't satisfied feeding off of it.
Nobody seemed to know what to do about it, offering it to him first didn't help as he'd drink for like 30 seconds and then complain for the other side.
His neck was fine and no matter which position I used, the problem continued.
I expressed off it for a while but he didn't like the bottle much so in the end I weaned him off that side (by that stage I was lopsided anyway ) and just fed him from the right until he self weaned at 13 months.

Sorry, I'm not much help!

I defintiely have a less able left boob. I just always offer it first so that it is still getting emptied. Lly will get a bit annoyed but I perservere as the less she sucks the less it will make.

I think my right one is the same Rach. It used to be the "megaboob" and have the fastest let down etc but lately tom gets frustrated on that one, drinks for a couple of minutes, swaps to the other and drinks well.

I can get him to drink from it at night though. I just joke that one is chocolate and one vanilla.

I am the same with my right boob, it just doesn't work 100%! My left is always engorged, my right is never engorged, so that tells me its not so good!

When I express left boob, I have about 10 holes squirting, whereas on the right only maximum 3 holes squirt (way TMI) thats how I definately know that one boob is not so good! I heard it was normal for one boob to be not so good though?

Yeah I have a dud right boob. It doesn't produce as much milk but when it gets really bad I always offer it first and try to keep her sucking on it as long as possible to build up the supply, then I try to get her to suck again when she finishes off on the other. If I do this for a couple of days it seems to start producing more- still not as much as my left though.

I would just try to get her to feed off it as much as possible- maybe use hot wheat packs to open the ducts up a bit before/during feeding as well.

I had the same problem with the lefty boob. It started out being blocked ducts (so I was told). I managed to get it going again after a few days of nothing/very little...but it was never quite the same again.

I have the same problem, but it's not that one doesn't work properly it's because one has a HUGE amount and the other is just normal.. When I do the night time feed I have to make sure to feed on the over supply boob last and longest otherwise after 11 hours (give or take) I wake up saturated even if I express

My right one was a dud (was with Andrew too). I found that if I fed Josh from my left and expressed the right he got a good feed.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Sounds like its pretty common then. I had it with Jack too but it didn't start to get like this until he was past one so I didn't really push it and he stopped that side all together.

I've found she takes it fine if shes tired so have been giving it to her just before she goes for a nap and first at night and things seem to have picked up a bit. I think I have heaps in the other one too so if she totally gives up my bad side its no worry.

Thanks for all the help

My left boob was my less "productive" side with Maya and with the gremlins. It's also the side I got the nasty mastitis in

A colleague from my old job ended up feeding her son from one side only (is it the side your dominant hand is on, apparently thats common), she breasfed him for ages only using one side. So it's not the end of the world if it packs up completely, the other side should compensate. Most people have one that produces more than the other side (for me, proving the theory, my right makes far less than my left and I am right handed). I would persevere, if you can express off in the shower but you think she's not getting anything then give it a massage and maybe some heat before latching her on, if you can get some out baby's mouth is even more efficent so she should get something.

Isn't it a pain our boobs don't come with gauges so we could see how much babies get

My right is less productive too. I have a wee theory behind mine, its the side I had my nipple peirced on and I can see a wee bit of scarring and have had heaps of blocked ducts. So I suspect the milk can't get out properly and so gets full and I get a blocked duct so then Caprece gets cross cos not as much comes out so she doesn't suck as hard.

My hubby used to have pierced nipples, people would ask when I was getting mine done! I said well if I am going to have any kids and want to breastfeed it's probably not the best idea.

Wow - me too! My right boob produces milk, but not nearly as much as my left boob. Cohen always prefers the left boob I try to feed off the right as often as I can in the day but sometimes it just won't let down. Coehn sleeps next to me so I just feed him of that bung right side all night - this way it gets some stimulation and I don't have to keep rolling over and changing sides.

I thought it was just me, but it seems really common.
