Topic: Best ISP for broadband? Posted: 29 February 2008 at 12:28pm |
I have finally convinced DH that we *need* broadband as I can't handle this slooooww dial up anymore So which ISP do you guys recommend? We don't download music or anything so wouldn't need any super dooper 50GB plan or anything lol! ATM looking at Slingshots $29.95 plan (with tolls). Any comments??

I just have Xtra's $39.95 3GB plan - never use the whole 3GB, but use more than 200MB which is their next step down. Haven't had any problems with it since I got it. Mum and Dad have just signed up for the 200MB one and they're ADORING it. It's taken almost 10 years for me to persuade them to get broadband LOL and now they'll never go back to dialup.

We use Inspire and won't go near slingshot because of friends receiving very poor service (up time) and extremely bad customer service.

Slingshot !!!!!
Need I say more very, very, very bad service with them.
We have used Ihug and they were good we only changed as DH downloads a lot and we needed a cheaper plan.
We are now with Orcon and they have been fantastic. There customer service has been top notch and we have never had any "technical difficulties" with them like we did with Slingshot

That's interesting what a couple of you say about Slingshot. We've been with them, with a number of different plans, for 4 years now and never had any issues... there's only been 2 major problems, both after shifting towns and both were actually Telecom's fault.
We have that plan you are looking at, Kelly. It suits us, and the couple of times we've gone over the limit (like this month, because DH has been watching the cricket online) we've just purchased an extra 3GB for $5.

We're with Xtra, I can't say they're the "best" but we haven't had any probs with them. I think I pay $49.95 for 5GB? I have no idea, I don't read the bills.

Oh, I just remembered... if you have internet & tolls with Slingshot you get 200 free minutes to call other internet/tolls customers. My PIL have dial-up + tolls, and my BIL has broadband + tolls (both with Slingshot ) and that means we only pay for tollcalls to my family or to my SIL overseas.

Were with xtra and have the 6GB which is $49.95 a month we have had a couple of problems with them but they were really good about. We run out of a broadband the day before it changes over so it's just enough but still might have to go 10GB as Jesse is an online gamer and downloads hepas of stuff for his PS3.

Snap Kandice! Telstra cable here too! So much better than Xtra etc, and DH did an online test against Xtra and its so much faster. Plus its only about $40 a month for 5G.

We're with orcon, and they've been absolutely horrible. They mis-judged their payments (was on direct debits) and slammed us with a huge bill, part of it we'd already paid... finally have that sorted, also our internet was cutting out sporadically (maybe 5 times a day it would cut out every 5 minutes, and only stay down for maybe a min and keep doing that for an hour) for about 5 months. Just ended a couple weeks ago, after many many tickets filed in complaint. And just recently have been having disgusting speeds, as in slower than dial-up.
If you can get telstra cable I totally recommend it. Was awesome when we had it, and I can't wait till we can get back to an area where we can change back to it.

Alia you are in a telstar clear area. Petone was one of the first areas in NZ to get the telstar clear cables or saturn cables as they were called at the start.

I'm with xtra and haven't had any problems with them. I've got the 3kb plan and love it as I do download a bit of music.

God NZ is so overpriced its ridiculous! We pay £29 p/m ( I know that thats $90 but when your earning pounds its pretty much pound for dollar) and get unlimited broadband, unlimited national AND international calling. It is cheaper for us to call my Mum from here than it was for me to call when we lived in Wellington and she was in Paraparaumu!

LOL Jennz! For us it's cheaper for us to ring our parents in Ireland than it is for them to make a national call
For value for money Slingshot is heaps better than Xtra. And for that we put up with the few times that we've had to contact customer support.
