This has stemmed from the power bills thread,

I use a column heater to keep the chill off Ethans room at night, but which do you think would be cheaper to run.

a) a smaller 3 fin heater on a higher heat

b) the larger 8 fin heater on a lower heat....

There's a report on www.consumer.org.nz about oil heaters and it includes a calculation to work out what size heater you should use and how much it would cost. Not sure if it fully answers your question but I hope it helps.

Do you have it on thermostat? Is it on all day/night? Remember the most expensive part of column heaters is the oil heating up, so I'd recommend that you have it on thermostat and on all day. Not sure which would be cheaper though.
