Topic: Crawling question Posted: 12 May 2008 at 4:46pm |
Daniel has been commando crawling for a while now. He gets up on all 4 and rocks and does this a lot every day.. he's maybe done this now for 2 months. How long is it usually between getting on all 4s to figuring out to move his legs and arms?
I'm rather sick of the conversation that goes...
Someone: Is he crawling?
Me: commando crawling but not proper crawling
Someone: Oh really?
Someone: What about walking?
Me: no not yet
Someone: Oh, that's not good, he's falling behind isn't he?!
Grrr!

um no he's not falling behind...for a start some children never crawl..and commando crawling is actually fabulous for their brain and midline development and up until 18 months is considered 'normal' for walking development..you tell them that!:)can't help with how long it takes but people who say things like that annoy me!:)

OMG I can't believe you are getting that. Josh has only just started walking yesterday for good amounts of time.
He is doing fine. It took Josh a long time from comando to up on all fours and crawlinbg and you have seen him do those stages so Daniel is fine.

Commando crawling is like army style. Sticking low to the ground, using their whole forearms on the ground and using their knees and feet to move.
Does that make sense? lol
I'm still curious when he will start crawling properly

Could be tomorrow or could be months away still Sorry no help but after watching all the babies at coffee group it is amazing to see how they all do things differently, different order, different time frame etc.
Spencer has only just started commando crawling and I get asked all the time as well, it can get a tad annoying and makes me paranoid sometimes.

I think Bella started the 'rocking' around 6-7 months, then commando crawling, then she has only just mastered actual crawling in the last few weeks, and now she's getting into EVERYTHING!!!

Bailey didnt crawl at all! he just got up and walked at 10 months!
So every child is different!
My neice only rolled around before walking at 1.
My nephew only comando crawled then walked at 1.
Astin did/ does the spider crawl then just got up and walked at 9 months (but still a bit iffy on it!)...
There is no right or wrong age for crawling or walking and i tend to think that the people that call a child "slow or behind" for not doing the norm - probably dont have kids!

Could be never or could be after he walks or could be tomorrow!
i agree with the person that said to say yes.
Commando crawling is still a form of crawling.

I think that it is disgusting how people think they have the right to make comments about your baby and what they are or aren't doing. Jack crawlled at about 9.5mths and isn't walking yet but walking along furniture. I feel like I always have to justify it some how by telling them how many teeth he has already or that I am in no hurry for him to walk. Silly I know but I cannot seem to help it.
You could just say yes as commando crawling is still crawling. Or you could say something smart like no but he makes a mean spag bog! That may shut them up

Commando crawling looks soooooo cute. I had never seen a baby commando crawl before until one of the babies in our coffee group started doing it.
My friends baby didn't start crawling until just over her first bday. Also he could be focusing on other developmental skills...crawling/walking just seem to be the main skills everyone asks about.
Just think in about 6 months time no know will be able to tell whose baby crawled/walked first...
