Topic: advice needed Posted: 22 April 2006 at 6:20pm |
well my darling is now 11days old, but the only place she will sleep is either on me or my husband or in her car seat, she wont sleep in the cot at all.
we dont have a bassinet, so want to know how to get her to sleep in the cot, as i am desparate for a good nights sleep, ( i havent seen my bed at night since she was born).
or if anyone has a bassinet i could borrow i would be extremely grateful.

if you lived in nelson you could use mine!!!
as for sleeping... all i can suggest is that if you havent got her wrapped up tight, wrap her up? that make sense? isnt there a comfort thing with new babies liking to be snuggled up a bit because they are used to it in our tummies?
with my second daughter i snuck in a little clock that ticked tocked and funnily enough that seemed to help too!! i thought it might sound a bit like a heart beating which is another thing they are used to in our tummies.
hope that something or someone has some good advice for you kaz.... or just a bassinet to try goodluck kaz

Oh I remember that, does she not sleep that much cos she is feeding all the time? cos thts what Jack did and he was only really comfort sucking so we gave him a dummy and it stopped us going insane. We also had Jack in our bed some nights but that can be a bad thing cos they get used to it pretty quick. Also have u tried letting her cry for 15 mins at the most my midwife sat with me so i wudn't go in and it worked.
Where do u live?

I would recommend getting the sleep video through Plunket..that really helped us. With both our kids we wrapped them and also gave them a dummy. I'd hold off on the dummy though if you can because Alex who is now 4 months is a real fussy eater...and I'm sure its because he wants the dummy more than the bottle.
Have you got the cot made up so she is near the bottom as opposed to up the top?
With Alex, if he doesn't settle I rub his chest very gently and that calms him down...as he settles I reduce the pressure on his chest until my hand is off completely. Works most of the time. Of course, they do get overtired and then the sleep video is good to A) read the signs so they don't get overtired and B) what to do when they do get overtired.

With my daughter Paige I spent the day at Plunket and it was made very clear to me that "babies" need to be shown the right way from the day dot!! They do not come into this world with "preferences" - we allow them to!!!
I spent the day there and they set up a routine which was great. Paige was 3 weeks old.
Generally you get them up, fed, burped, nappies off for a nude kick, changed, wrapped up firmly then back to bed. And if they cry for 15 minutes it is not a problem as they have had every little thing attended too. This is recommended to be completed and take no longer then an hour - and hour and a half!! And should be like that til they are three months.
I had a major problem letting Paige cry but after a few days I realised it was worth it. She fed better, was really alert and I have a had a dream child with no problems ever since at bedtime - no matter where she sleeps. And she is nearly 7 and loves her bed!!!
Hang in there and perservere....what you do now will set up the next precious years for baby and you!

With the routine you just mentioned, I'm assuming you start with that in the morning, but then how often do you repeat it? What about playtime?

The have family centres up in Auckland where they take baby for a bit (and beds for you to go and have a sleep in!) then they try to teach you different things that can help baby to sleep- like the plunket video etc.
I could never let Charlotte cry- we used to bounce her on a swiss ball till she fell asleep then rocked her as we walked to her bassinette and one put her in it as the other rocked the bassinette, then we would slowly slow down the rocking til she was just asleep in the bassinette. It was pretty extreme but it did mean I didn't have to listen to her cry or constantly carry her around with me. She is now the best sleeper I know! She sleeps in a big girl bed- 3 hours every afternoon and 7pm-7:30am no fuss.
There are other people from my antenatal coffee group who did similar things though and are still having real sleep issues with their kids. I know one couple who have their 2 year old sleeping in her pram next to their bed and they move it with their foot to keep her asleep all night!!!!

thanks for the advice,
Rhiannon is always wrapped when put to bed, last night i took the sleep t out of the cot and she slept in there from 8.30pm - 1.30am when she woke for a feed then she was back down from 2.30am-5.30am when she woke again.
i think she didnt like being restrained by the sleep t but loves being wrapped so will see how i go tonight

Also Plunketline 0800 something! will have some other great ideas for settling a little one - I called them every night for a few nights after we got home from the hospital second time around.
In the middle of the night, we just fed, burped, and put straight back to bed - I'd only change them if they're really wet or have poos - changing them in the night makes them cold and wakes them up too much.
I'd much rather put them to bed awake than asleep.

Hey Kaz, this is a bit random... but if you ever want some help I can be of service. More than happy to take her for a walk around the block or something with Hannah so you can snatch a bit of sleep. Or I could come round and do dishes or vacuuming to give you a hand.
Anything to make your life easier! Just give me a PM

piper was the same and did not like the cot, I thought it might be cause she was so small and I did not have a bassinet so embarassingly I put her in a drawer till I could organise one and she slept perfectly. First nights in her cot she would sleep for only bout half hour at a time but slept in drawer for 3-4 hours now I borrowed a bassinet and she sleeps for bout 6 hours on a night
