Topic: formula - spilling Posted: 28 May 2008 at 9:13pm |
I've spoken about this in the Oct thread, but am keen on a few more opinions. My baby has been fully bf until the past couple of weeks when I've starting introducing formula. She now takes about 200ml a day, over a couple of feeds.
Anyway, the problem is she has become spilly since starting on formula (Nurture Gold). Usually within 30 mins of taking it. I also see her swallowing during the day, which suggests it may be coming up.
My question is, is this a normal reaction to starting formula, or does it indicate an intolerance and should I try a different formula type?
Would value opinions please. Thanks!

It could just be the type of formula it might be worth trying a different brand.
Normally lactose intolerance would cause vomitting and/or diarhea (can never spell that word), and by vomitting I mean real vomitting that would be upsetting her and like the whole feed coming up. An allergy you would normally expect to see some kind of skin reaction to it, like a rash, hives, ezcema as well as perhaps either breathing problems (usually only with severe reactions) and bowel problems, I think will allergies its more common to get constipation than diarhea (with the diary allergy anyway, although I could be wrong but thats what Spencer got with his.).
Hope that helps.

Tom was really spilly on S26 but better on Nuture so it maybe worth trying some others to see if its better. Also I heard (and this could be total crap) that the Gold versions are actually harder on their tummies and the good ol bog standard is better. I think Tom is better without the Gold but it could also be a developmental thing....how do you know

Yeah I'd just try a different brand and if that doesn't help maybe a non gold version

Yep this is what i've heard too. They are much richer etc, particularly for babies under 1 year, and worse again for babies under 6 months.
Edited for spelling.

My MW and the hospital told me to avoid Gold unless you are having huge constipation issues.
I would suggest that you try the non gold version or another brand altogether. All babies are so different. My MW also told me to stick with a formula for at least 2 weeks before changing as it can take a week or so for their tummys to get use to it. Obviously unless they are really sick or grizzly and uncomfortable then you would change immeadiately.

Thanks for the advice. I think I might try another non-gold brand. Not sure if she'll take it though. Was a major struggle to get her to take formula in the first place

We switched from Nurture Gold to normal Nuture and had no problems at all with Leah taking it, but in saying that we had no problems when we switched to cows milk either. Leah was quite spilly when she was born and that took a while to settle but no probs on the formula.

Hmmm, Chloe was like that too but after breastmilk as well as formula... does it happen at all her feeds or just her formula ones? Because if it happens at all the feeds, it may not be the formula, may just be something that happened on it's own (some babies get more spilly as they get a bit older, and then it improves again). If it's just after the formula, maybe try a different formula?

Kabe a friend of mine had to start formula a couple of weeks ago while she was on holiday, and found her baby spilt a lot if she didn't boil the water (she was staying on a farm). When using boiled water she was fine.
When she got home to Wellington she didn't boil because she thought the water would be fine, but her DD started spewing again. Now she is boiling again and she has stopped spewing. She is using the non-Gold Karitane formula.
Might be worth a try?

Rowan is mostly breastfed, but on occasions I give her the odd bottle. At 4 mths she was fine on S26 (readymixed in carton) but a month later I fed her the same and she was violently ill, went green and floppy and was dry-retching even after spilling her whole feed). Tried sachets of Nurture plain and she still was ill.
I don't truly know if it was the formula or a bug as she was originally fine. Pretty sure it was the formula tho as it was on more than one occasion. Also her father doesn't tolerate dairy too well (gas) and his mother told me he was on special formula when he was a baby. My guess is that she developed the intolerance over time.
I now feed her Karicare Goat 2 (6 mths onwards) for those occasional feeds and she's fine on it. She also loves it. I think it tastes a lot more like breastmilk than other formulas. Only problem is it's really expensive- $36!!. When I wean her off the breast I want to give her Organic goat formula which is $20 more again so I've kind of accepted the extra cost

That must have been a worry for you Bimble. Glad you've got it sorted. I tried S26 but DD wouldn't take it. Ended up sticking wih Nurture Gold as she stopped spilling on it. Maybe she just needed to get use to it.

Thomas has the nurture starter - I got told to stay away from the gold as it makes them spilly? I'm just real ultra careful when i burp him - otherwise he powerchucks everywhere!

same here with us, he spews with nurture gold but is fine with the red one, which is great cause its cheaper!
we had to use boiled water to begin with too after breast feeding which is sterile i guess it was a shock to his tummy to have tap water
