Topic: Protein Powders Posted: 27 April 2006 at 12:20pm |
I am not a big fan of meat, and I am pretty sick of eating nuts, so I was wondering if I can get more protein for babys development by using the protein powders that people use for gym workouts? I used to drink them (I used the sculpt brand) but i havent used them during pregnancy cos I dont know whether they are safe or not?
Anyone know about this?

I asked the question at a Supplement store and was told they were ok by the naturopath there, but was also told by a Personal Trainer they weren't. Sorry not much help there really ...
You can send an email query to the likes of Horleys (i think they are the makers of sculpt) or Leppin and ask.

My GP said that it's not that they aren't safe, but it's not the best form of protein for you to have during pregnancy, and there are other ingredients in them that won't really benefit you either. Can't remember what they are though !! And my GP is pretty onto these things (used to do obstetrics as well), I used to love those drinks and I'd buy one every time I went to the gym right up until I found out I was pregnant. My personal trainer also said virtually the same thing, she is qualified for fitness in pregnancy and did a year long certificate or something. It's just that I got all this info back when I was only 7 weeks or so and have long since forgotten the specifics, so my apologies !

Try Complan. I'm drinking it now that I'm breastfeeding, but it's also recommended for preganant women, as it contains protein and all manner of vitamins that you need.
Plus, I find it really good for when I have a craving for something sweet but don't want empty calories! The strawberry flavour is really nice.
