I had someone lined up to make Kylahs cake, but not sure if she still can.

I looking for some help. Im not a good cake maker lol but im going to try. Its Kylahs Birthday on friday and i want to make just a square cake, but with decorations.

Like this cake but minus the bear on top. I want the stuff that goes around the edges but in purple and i want the main icing pink.

And see where is says Kobe, i want that to say Kylah, can you buy the flat icing that you can cut shapes out of? Anyone know what its called?

Also the pins around the side, how do i do that?

Any ideas or tips or just help.. Please

Flat icing = Fondant.. you can get it at the supermarket and you can put food colouring in to make it coloured. The pins are piped (icing coming out of a bag) I'd advise to use actual pics and take em off before they get eaten

Do you know how to do the scalloped borders?

Ok, the blue "dots" are made with a star shaped icing nozzle, you can buy icing kits even at the supermarket, they have a bag and some nozzles, you just do a "dab" to get the star effect.

The pins are drawn on with a fine icing nozzle

Same as the squares with the letters on

The icing is probably a butter icing that has been coloured

Easy enough to make and colour, I just can't think of the icing recipe, its got kremelta in it anyhow...
You can use food colouring, although icing colours give a better colour, but can be pricey.

No, i used to. We had this metal thing that used to do it. Man i WISH we still had it. Is there anyone in christchurch that has one i could borrow??

Thats MissAngel, Fondant, do you know if its expensive? Maybe i should make a trip to the supermarket to have a look. And real pins thats a great idea.

Also, the base, do i just buy a sponge? Can you buy chocolate sponge? Whats the best iceing to use, see how they have spread theres on good lol, i want mine to turn out good. I hate the icing sugur/butter/water/vanilla essance icing though.. its the basic one isnt it. Cant you make better icing?

Thanks again ladies

Buttercream.

I'd just use the recipie without the kremelta tbh. You can use 1 block of butter, supersoft (so its almost starting to melt) about 6-8 cups of icing sugar - mix em up with a electric mixer till its all creamed nice, add some colour and bam there you go. Keeps for a good 3 days in an airtight container.

Thanks fattartsrock, cool didnt know i could get one fromt he supermarket. Butter icing, right google is going to be my friend.

Icing colours, might check that out too.

I was thinking, using that flat, oh fondant stuff for the letters and flat squares, would be easier wouldnt it?

The pins, they would have been done on a flat surface first right? To set and dry and then put on?

Instead of using a sponge, you can just buy those cakes in a box where you just add water and egg etc. You can't really go wrong with them!

Eeek, I am just going through this too with making one for DH's birthday.

I think I'll go to this place though because their cakes look SO cute and not that bad priced really the small round one was $40 which is about 15 coffee slices I think.

http://www.sweetkitchen.co.nz/specialoccasions.aspx

Sometimes all the hassle of making it yourself isnt worth it if you dont have all the equipment etc.

I wouldn't use a sponge, they are a bit light for heavy icing..

Ask your new world or countdown to make a cake? about $40?

wahtever flavour you like.

Royal or Almond icing is what you are after, its white, you may be able to colour it though, I'm sure. You will need to stick it to the cake with jam - apricot jam.

Kandice, have you looked in the baking section near the dried fruit etc....Royal Icing is what you ice Xmas cakes with and I think it is usually near the fruit mince.

Because I don't have a large enough cake tin for most of the brithday cakes in the womens weekly cook book I just make it in my roasting dish....so your could substitue your cake tin for something like that if you want (it takes about 3 x 240g cake mix)

ETA: in woolworths the icing you're after is kept next to the cake decorating stuf such as hundreds and thousands, chocolate chips

I ended up making the fondant for Sam's cake as I hate royal icing and wanted to make sure it was allergy friendly. It was really easy and was basically melted marshmallows and icing sugar. PM me if you want the full recipe.
Also if you are going to colour fondant the easiest way is to put it in a snap lock bag with some food colouring (the gel colours are the best) and mix it until it is the colour you want, then just roll it out. It was easier than I would have guessed.

It was so yum it was ridiculous. I spend the day picking bits of icing off the cake - mmmmm.
It's meant to be better for kids cakes than the traditional yuck tasting stuff
