Hi ladies

Last year i think there was an article on TV about drinking during preganacy with some people reporting that their midwifes etc told the mums to be that the odd glass of wine was ok during preganacy. I'm just wondering how many of us on here have been told that.

I don't think my MW has told me anything either way really - mainly cos I haven't asked her!

At the initial appointment she did the cursory -  "now you know you're not supposed to drink /smoke / shoot crack into your eyeballs" speech, but that was about it.

But I knew all that stuff anyway  . And I have made the choice not to have anything to drink whilst pregnant  - mainly because I REALLY don't feel like it. So it's not an issue for me.

I think I recall my mw (both pgs) asking me if I drank, smoked, snorted cocaine or any other substance.

As I said no .. she probably didnt go into the whole spiel.

Got asked, never was advised drinking was ok though. Would never risk it anyway considering there is no safe amount or time during pregnancy to consume alcohol...and I've seen the effects.

My midwife did the same as above really - asked the questions, and said do you know that you shouldn't drink while pregnant? I said yip and i haven't since i was found out i was pregnant (at 5 weeks). She said good. And that was that conversation lol
However it is amazing how many people - mainly older women - who have told me not to be silly its fine for you to drink!! They drunk while they were pregnant with their kids and they are fine etc etc......lol

my OB never said anything bout it but i have 2 MW friends who both said the occasional drink was ok but it was limited to half a beer mixed with lemonade or something, one was from the uk though so maybe things are slightly more chilled there

My Mw didn't really go into to it as i said I don't drink any way.

But a friends MW here in Auckland told her it was fine to have 1 glass a week right through out the whole preganancy Can you believe it!!!
i was so cross as i have done a bit of research into fetoal alcohol syndrome part of ( uni papers towards early intervention post grad) and no way! should any way be drinking!!

The risk is huge and the effect is sometimes unknow! Such as learning difficulities that are picked up when the child is older.

my friend did have the occassional wine! So will wait and see the effects as the child grows up!

what? your NOT supposed to shoot crack into your eyeballs? ah cr*p , *puts down needle *

my mw didn't say anything , but im not a big drinker anyway .
But you wanna hear (or read) something I think is shocking ? my friend smoked during pregnancy , and I was at her babies birth , baby was 8lbs 3 ozs, so a good weight considering , and the mw said "its a good thing you did smoke during pregnancy , other wise she may have been bigger "
I know! I was shocked . And told her so . So she didn't like me .

meant to say both my aunt and my future MIL have told me I can have a glass of champagne or wine at my wedding, but its a personal choice of mine not to, I just don't want to.
So my grandmother told them to sod off and leave me alone haha

My doctor told me it was fine to have a glass or two of wine a week. I had 1 glass of wine on my wedding day over the space of 2 hours.

I know plenty of people who had the occasional wine during pregnancy.

I once had a patient who smoked pot while pregnant so her baby would be smaller.

I was never 'told' anything - I do have a MW friend who said the occasional drink was OK. I did have a glass of wine every 6 weeks or so after the first trimester, always after a meal and always with lots of water.

My midwife is very anti drinking during pregnancy as she said it's inconclusive exactly how much causes damage and everyones tolerances are different. So safest bet is just to stay away from it.
I did have a single quarter full glass on my birthday with a big lunch and sipped it slowly, that's it though, that was my one special occasion!

ETA: Man it tasted sooooo good! I savoured it!

I haven't drunk with either pregnancy since I've found at, I've done enough research on FAS and FAE to know not to. Just because you don't get the syndrome doesn't mean you can't be affected - simple things like worse social skills, lack of concentration, ADD, less intelligent than your potential.... not worth it IMO.

I got horrendously drunk the night before I found out I was pregnant    It was my birthday and I had not a clue that I was knocked up.

I spent pretty much the entire pregnancy freaking out about FAS.

i believe this happens alot and whats important is what you do once you have found out. Often is early on in the preganacy before bub is contecting to your blood supply.

I got horrendously drunk 3 days before I found out I was pregnant - and it turned out I was about 10 weeks gone at the time. I honestly had no idea either (strange as that may sound!!)

We were worried and told my obs when we met him 2 weeks later - he told us not to panic, that baby would probably have been a bit tipsy but everything should be fine. Lets hope so...
