Just wondering - I have heard people talk about growth scans here and I am 30 weeks and my midwife hasnt mentioned about me having any more scans (the last one I had was at 20 weeks)...does everyone have growth scans in later pregnancy or only some people or how does it work? Will I have another scan before my due date to check that everything is going well?

My midwife told me I wouldnt have another one unless there is a reason for them to have to check the baby's growth or postion. I only had one at 20 weeks too- think thats the norm.

My LMC has said I'll probably have another one just to check on things and Maddie's position and everything....wohoo! (of course right now I'm more interested in the size!

I had millions of scans from 36-39 weeks. I think one every 2 days. I was sick with pre-eclampsia so that may have been why I did. Usually you don't have one unless something is not right eg postition of baby eg breach. Your MW should let you know if you need one.

There are only 2 scans that are standard to have. The 12 week and the 20 week. Unless there is something that needs checking you don't get anymore unfortunately.

I had loads of scans with Andrew from 32 weeks onwards because he was stretched out and measuring off the scales. My LMC has mentioned having at least one more for this pregnancy to see how big he is and check position (Andrew got his shoulder stuck) to determine if they'll need to induce before he gets too overdue.
Way back in the day with #1 (Sean) I only had the 20 week scan.

I had a scan at 7 weeks to see if I was pregnant- UMM YEP PRETTY SURE I WAS! Then at 16 weeks since I had bleeding, then at 18 weeks to see what the sex was then again at hmm... can't remember hahaha- something like 23-25 weeks or something like that anyways.
They did stick me on the machine last week to check his head circumference- since its been noted that it's rather large- GREAT... But they didn't take any still pictures to give to me, they took a few still pictures just to measure his head and that was it- they just got out the doppler again to check his heart rate.
I want another scan though and pictures I can keep- I would die to get one of them 3d scans but I don't know of anywhere close that do it since I'm about 3 hours north and south of a large hospital. And this little fellas being born in a country hospital- which has 1 birth every 8-14 days. So they like it when the mums want to stay longer- I'd just stay since they give you the best meals I've ever had in an hospital haha. Roast pork and CRACKLING!! YUM!

I've had: (in three pregnancies)

KIYA: one scan at 26-28ish weeks - anatomy and dating scan in one, to see how far along I was, as I'd only found out I was pregnant about 6 weeks before

JOSIAH: three scans at 7, 11 and 12 weeks - excessive bleeding
one scan at 20 weeks - anatomy

XAVIER: one scan at 16 weeks - supposed to be 20 week anatomy scan, but got there to find out dates were wrong
one scan at 20 weeks - anatomy

I don't expect to have any other scans this time (with Xavier) unless something happens, like him deciding to go breech.

There's another reason for later scans and that is if they suspect the baby is not growing, or not growing enough. With my second child, my fundal height got to 2cm under average so I was sent in for a growth scan: all normal. Then she flipped so I was sent for two more scans to see if she was breech (she kept flipping the right way for the scans on Friday and back to breech for Tuesday appointments lol).

I had one more scan when I went into labour to confirm that she was posterior and as for the growth scans... well she was full term and 8lb, 4oz !! haha

yep - with Paris i only got the 20 week scan.   if you request the 12 week nuchal fold scan then you can get it, or early scans to confirm dates or if there seem to be probs etc.

Scans later in preg you only usually get to check position and size if there are any doubts as to baby's growth, or whether it will fit thru your pelvis or if there are med probs... otherwise - if you have an exceedingly normal pregnancy like i did with Paris - you only get 1.

I had a 2nd with Ayja at 33 weeks cos my fundal height was going backwards... measured 28 weeks at that stage... only to find she too was just an averge little monkey.

Do they always do a scan just before labour to check position etc - if they dont how do they know that everything is lines up the right way in there?

I only had a scan in late pregnancy to check Han's growth as her fundal height was measuring small.
Not a nice circumstance to have a scan in... I was quite worried. Turns out she was measuring ~9lbs... that made me even more worried.

they can feel - midwives are absolutely amazing at being able to tell a back from a front from a hand and a foot - and once baby heads south their head gets engaged and the midwife can usually tell how deep it is into your pelvis and which way round it is too. - Its really interesting to feel another preggy ladies tummy and get to do the types of things a midwife does - i have had the opportunity a couple of times and you do sorta get an idea... but with my own tummy - i was never really any wiser!

In the end they feel whether the back is outwards or to the side and can guess where baby is.... either way theres not much use taking a scan usually unless they are in some really weird position like breech, or lying transverse - cos other than that, baby is gonna come out - it just might take a little bit of time turning on the way out (OUCH!).

I had a 20-week scan and that's all we get here in Palmy, unless there's reason to be cautions as far as I know.  I'd be curious to find out how much it costs to elect for another scan.

I had a growth scan at 36 weeks with Maya coz my midwife wasn't 100% sure how she was presenting (posterior) and because she felt big for dates apparantly.

This time round I am the scan queen lol - had scans at 5, 6, 9, 12 and 14 weeks, and then fortnightly from 17 weeks so my little bubs are very exposed.

Andie, I had a few scans in Palmy with Andrew. I think it has a lot to do with your MW. A scan at broadway radiology is about $140.
