Ok so a personal opinion I haad very heavy periods with it which bothered me because I couldn't stray far from a bathroom, I went from 3 day periods to long painful 7-9 day periods but this is by no means typical, I stuck it out 6 months and when things didn't improve and I started having back pain I had it removed, the doctor thinks I may be one of the very few who had a allegeric reaction to the copper.
Positives about it? They say it's the best form of contraception, the copper one I had was free but there is Mirena and that is about $400-$500??? and it can stay in longer, your periods get shorter and shorter with that one. You never forget about contraception and you only have to deal with it every few years 
I wouldn't get another one for obvious reasons but I have friends who swear by them 100%!! I would give it a go if I was you.
I got it done free via family planning clinic too

I'm a bit IFFY when in comes to IUDs, all because I know the complications that can result from them. Yea they seem like God's gift to contraception but they definitely have their flaws, that I believe are a greater risk in the long run. But that's just me, I studied maternal science so may make me biased! lol.

I had one for 2 years before we decided to TTC. i had no problems with it.infact it was great! and if youre forgetful like me its a lifesaver.....now that im over 22 and i dont have a community services card il have to pay 22.50 for each appointment-you need 2-1 for tests and 1 for the fitting. ive booked my first appointment for next week

Oh yeah if you do have a community service card it should be $5 at family planning.
I only had one appointment  Went in asked for it and had it fitted 15 mins later.... what tests do they do??

I got my IUD for free, even the doctor's visit was free as I got it 6 weeks after having Bubs. Was really good for the 14months that it worked but now I can't have another one... At the time I was sooooo upset but love my little Erika heaps & heaps now

I was born with the IUD still in my mother. So dont know if they are more reliable now but wont be using it myself.

They are supposed to be pretty good, I researched them all through a sexuality paper at TCol but only briefly. I swore black and blue that I would never get one (pre-baby) as they look icky, but TBH I'm thinking about getting one after #2 is born. I'm not going to get a hormonal one, just the copper. The Mirena one is the one that gets inserted in your arm, not like the others that go up your v-jay-jay.

emz, the Mirena goes up your v-jay-jay as well. There is another contraceptive patch which goes into your arm but I'm not sure it's available in NZ.
Once we have our finances sorted I'm going to get the Mirena. I hate being on the pill any one I try either messes up my hormones or skin.
When I was in Ireland I was using NuvaRing which is like a monthly IUD which totally rocked. Yet to be available in NZ though

I read that family planning brochure on the IUD & it sounds a little scary....
I know I've been through labour twice now but the pain for inserting it freaks me out, does it hurt much?
Also can some one enlighten me on the TMI of checking to make sure it's still in there each month? How easy is it to feel the nylon?

I actually felt one quick pinch and that was it... really it wasn't bad at all for me (the insertion) it was over quick but I was a bit crampy afterwards.
I also was very naughty and never checked my strings... I just couldn't do it, guess im not that in touch with my body. DF on the other hand said he could feel them TMI TMI TMI TMI

100% better than condoms *if* your body gets used to it and you don't have the heavy periods, crampy etc.
Condoms are a PITA, but I would rather use them than suffer the side effects I had from the IUD but then I also can't take the pill because of hormonal issues as well. If my body reacted well to the IUD I would still have it now, the concept is great it's easy stuff, most woman don't even notice it.
All I can say is give it a go, if things don't work out after a few months you can always take it out and try something else.
Because I had issues with the copper IUD and can't take the pill or have Depo I got offered the mirena fully subsidised but after doing some research I decided against it

I can't believe how undecided I am about this! I certainly don't want to go back to rain jackets & i've not been on the pill for at least 8 years.

I've had a copper IUD for four years without any problems...hasn't made my periods any worse or better, but I have issues in that department anyway with PCOS and endo so might not have noticed it if it had.
This might be TMI but my husband says that at the right angle he can feel the cords in a ahem, nice way, when we're, ahem, 'having relations' ....and he would much prefer me having that to having to use condoms!
