We have a few names we kind of like but I just cant decide, I just really cant... I am really scared that I will land up chosing a name at the time that I will hate later, I mean it will be around for a long time to come lol!
aarrghh!!! any advice on this name choosing thing...?

oh and I also forgot to say that I am a notorious non- decision maker, I have trouble deciding what to pick from a menu, let alone deciding things like this... I hate it I wish I would just make a decision and know it was right...!

We went through quite a few names before we finally came to like Erin, she was Breanna first, then Sophia... but eventually we fell 'out of love' with those, and Erin just stuck ! Good luck, and remember you don't have to decide right away, you can always wait until your bub is actually born

I've founding that 'choosing' names is actually more about finding something left over after the parents have gone through discounting every other name due to people that they've met and didn't like with those names...
Andrew was named Andrew because the Andrews we had met seemed nice and his middle name, William was because he is the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son (you get the picture) dating back a heap of generations on the Dunlop side.
We've worked through a few names for this chap - starting with Logan which I really, really like but is too 'new agey' for Nick and Sam which Nick really, really likes but was the name of two of my mother's cats (not at the same time) while I was growing up and therefore always to be associated with Oriental Ebony cats rather than kiddies for me. We've settled on a name for the gigantababy now - we'll just have to see if it sticks once he's born.

We went through a baby book and wrote down names we liked, i had always liked Emma and Ella. Corys really picky so it took awhile but once done she was Ella, i did freak out at first coz when we named her i didnt know it was as popular as it is and i started going noooo i want another name and when we did start looking for another name we couldnt find ANYTHING so she was meant to be called Ella

Oh and Grace is from corys side of the family from his nana or something since Ella was the first girl born for 86 years on his side of the family, thought it would be nice to find a name from there to use

Hi Mrs Frantic,

We have pretty much sorted out a name I think - I kinda said to hubby that I wanted to choose the name for our first baby (boy) and he would have hubby's first name as his middle name and hubby could choose the name for our second baby. I just really love the name that we have picked and even though we sometimes come up with other names I always seem to come back to this one. Good luck with naming your wee one.

I totally agree with Maree. When we were first seriously thinking about names we kept telling people what we liked when they asked, and everyone had an opinion, often negative,.." oh a brat from school was called that" " Ew I dont like that name" etc, so now we just say " oh its so hard to choose, we arent sure,..um,.." Very vague indeed! We have chosen a name for our bubs. But havent even told anyone ( except my best friend) that we have even chosen. We kept adding any name we found we liked to a list,..then often when we looked back on the list we would cross some off. DH kept changing his mind a lot! I suggested the name we have have chosen to DH when I was looking through names online, and as soon as he heard it he feel in love with it!

Well as you can see from our ticker our name is chosen and firmly in place.

We also went through a names book...went through separately, wrote down the names that were the same on each list...decided on a couple of options, then threw them all away and decided we liked Madeleine Grace.

Honestly I can't say how we knew it was right we just knew. (don't you hate it when people say that!!!). There is one other name combination that we like but somehow we just know it's not right for our little girl.

With Kobe we both new as soon as we heard it that it would be the one and amazingly both agreed on it but then we heard kobe byrant (american basketball player) was being done for rape and though oh dont know if i want the name association but then we went on our honeymoon to aussie and there was a girl in mcdonalds whos name was khobi and we looked at each other and both were like did you see her name at the same time. It felt almost like a sign so we decided that would be the name if he was a girl or boy just spelt differently.
This time round I was really starting to panick cos we had chosen Kobes name so early but had no idea for Addison. We had about 5 names that we both liked but none of them really jumped out like Kobes did, they were all ones we would settle for until I came on here and asked for ideas and the minute I saw it (thanks to Kelly aka caitlynsmygirl) I loved it and so did Hubby when I suggested it and we knew it was the one.

We didn't know what we were having with Andrew, I had an idea he was a boy but wasn't certain. We waited until he was out till we even started looking at names. I had a couple in mind but DH didn't like them. So we got out the baby name book started at "A" and called him the names in order till we got to Andrew and it suited him. Imagine if we had to do the whole book!!! His middle name is John same as my dad's middle name. DH's father packed a little hissy as the first born male is spose to get "Barnabas" as the middle name. Our come back, it's a family name that goes with his brother and he is the one to pass it on. My feeling with family names are great if they are normal names (like the William thing - nice simple name) but I ain't giving my child a wack name just because its a family name and I stuck to it. The first thing my family in Oz said when they were told his name - "After a great leauge player Andrew Johns". We didn't even think of that.

I had my girl name stolen by a friend of mine so i'm keeping tight on any names we decide for this one if we can find out what flavour it is.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Hubby and I somehow agreed on Ashlee right from the beginning. We had a mini list of the names we did agree on but would regularly go and cross off ones that we'd gone off but Ashlee was always there, as was Sophie but we hadn't made a firm decision right up until she was born. When we were in theatre and she arrived, hubby said 'what are we going to call her?' and we took a look at her and decided she looked like an Ashlee

The 'lee' part is mums middle name and I have a sister named Haylee so it was nice to be able to carry the Lee on for a third generation. Hope it continues!

Before we knew we were having a girl, we had a couple of boys names picked out - one of which happens to be my brothers name but that wasn't going to stop hubby and I from naming our son after him! If we have a boy next, we'll probably have the same names picked out and our kiddies will probably end up with the same initials which will be cute.

I highly recommend you have a few favourites chosen and decide when she arrives to see what she suits.

It was extra hard for us because I wanted an Indian(ish) name and yet Europian enough so that it wasnt difficult for others to pronounce......When I found out I was having a girl...I found several names I liked but hubby didnt like most of them. Finally I found Zaara and he liked it too...She was Zaara from there on.

But like others I never told any one what I was going to name her, specially my MIL...She wanted a very Indian, Hindu, old fashion name...I wasnt going to let that happen.

I think wait till your bub is born and I am sure out of the names you like one will just feel right!! Only 5 more weeks to go!

I agree with Maree too. We had no idea what we were having with PAris - i had gone through loads of baby books and baby sites writing down names that i liked, i would sit on the computer at night and go through sites and read out names alphabetically and mike would be "no, no no no" with the occasional, "that's kinda ok,, maybe" But eventually he came up with the name Paris and was adamant that if it was a girl that it would be Paris - then for middle name, i was thinking olivia.. but initials would have spelt POT so mike said no, and came up with Harmony... but for boys names - nooooo idea.. I was still sitting online the night before i had her trawling through name sites to try and find something we remotely liked that met Mike's approval.

We went though and thought of nicknames for each name we liked, what initials might spell, other people we knew with that name etc.

For Ayja, we thought we were having a boy for some reason - and had decided on Leo as our boys name and had nothing for a girls name - so when the 20 wk scan showed she was a girl.. we were like "uh-oh!" and again we went trawling through name sites - but this time we knew we had to have something just as unique as Paris's name. Ayja came from the model Aja Rock - it was down the very bottom of our list of possible maybe middle names... and slowly bit by bit made it's way to the top. some we didn't like, some my MIL made comments on, others me and Mike just couldn't agree on.. Then one day i was having a shower, thinking about names - and Mike came in to put some washing in the hamper.. and I said "what about Ayja Nicole?" and he said yep and that was it.

It all depends i spose on what you like. Do you want to include family names into it somewhere, do you like traditional names, James, matthew, etc etc, or do you want different names, and if so, are you sure you want something that everyone else seems to be calling their kid at the same time - if you choose something different how are you to know that it's not too out there and the child won't be made fun of at school.?
It's so much to think about and very daunting but the others are right - you will "just know" when you reach that right name. We had some back ups for in case Ayja didn't look like an "Ayja" but i don't think after naming her a few months out from having her, and calling her that up until then.. that we could have changed it.

I didn't really have any girls names that were "the one" but Hannah was the one I didn't absolutely hate by the time she was born and I found out what sex she was!

I don't think you should worry about getting sick of a name (once the babe is actually named that is)... I can't imagine that you'd get sick of the name as the name becomes your child... iykwim... ?

Feel free to disagree anyone!!

Kiya's name (pronounced kii-yah) is from a movie (Willow), and is a name I'd loved since I first heard it. I played around with a few different spellings, until I figured out one I liked. As her bio father broke up with me before she was born, I didn't have to worry about his opinion. Other than my cousins having fits of laughter telling me that the same word is rastafarian slang for marijuana (yeah, like that's common knowledge at her primary school!), I heard nothing negative about the name. Her middle name is Mary, same as mine, although it nearly was just initals: V. O., in memory of my much loved Nana who passed away a year before Kiya was born. However, my Dad told me that Nana actually didn't like her name and would not want anyone to be named after her so I decided not to.

Josiah's name (pronounced jo-sigh-ah is biblical. When Nathaniel and I first started dating, we went to a youth conference where one of the speakers used the 8 year old king as an example of rising appropriately to the occasion. Nat and I looked at each other, and both said "I like that name!"... and we just kept it in mind. When we found out I was pregnant, it came back up as a possible name and we felt it was right. Josiah's middle name is Phillip, same as Nathaniel.

Xavier's name (pronounced ex-save-ee-er) was a little harder... I went through my baby name book many times suggesting names to Nat, to have him say "I know a kid by that name... no." (Ah, the joys of being married to a teacher!) One evening, we were having a bath and flicking through the book when Nat said "What about Xavier?" I thought about it for a minute and said "yeah, maybe"... over the next couple of weeks it stuck! Choosing a middle name was a little harder, but in the end I suggested Max, as it seemed to fit, and Nat really liked it.

We decided on Joshua very early on - about 12 weeks into pregnancy. We toyed with both Ethan and Liam, both of which I really love as names, but luckily we decided on Joshua as Jono's boss's wife had twin boys a month before Joshie was born and named them Ethan and Liam!!! For a girl we could not decide on anything! Charlotte, Jessica and Maia were possibilites (although MIL took wildly agin Maia - think it was because of the lesbian on Shortland Street???)although I adored the names Lily, Isabella and Ella but Jono wasn't keen. It's hard deciding on names!! I always thought it would be easy, but boy was I in for a shock!!

Frantic, keep in mind you surname. As our surname is very different (as in they are all related and there is only 3 family's in NZ with the surname) we made sure we had a plain first name. Andrew's initals are AJZ.

Zaara's initials come to ZIM...hmmm....
I was talking to hubby the other day how I want a boy next and want to name him with "Z" as well...he was like why??? Its hard to find nice names with Z anyway.....kinda true!!! I better start looking now.

My initials are RIM but maiden was just RI AND my brother is RI too.... we never had middle names.

Keep in mind that regardless of how the initials come out for a girl it will change (if she decides) after she gets married! Mine did!
