Topic: straight to carseat? Posted: 11 June 2009 at 3:46pm |
DH and I are deciding whether or not to get a capsule or to go straight to a carseat. We live rurally, so by the time we've driven to town, baby will have been in the carseat for about 45 mins and its all but time to take him/her out anyway. So I'm not sure that we need a capsule for the convenience of being able to take baby in and out of the car without taking them out of the carseat.
We've had a look at some convertible carseats, and one things that struck me about them was the placement of the anchor straps when it is rear-facing. It did look like it would be quite a pain to get baby in and out of. And it looked impossible to get baby in and out of without waking them. Has anyone used one of these from newborn, and how did you find it? What brands would you recommend (or was it a silly idea?).
Any opinions much appreciated

We had a safe n sound convertible. Yes it is a right PITA when they are rear facing and tiny with those straps. But I don't think thats a silly idea to look at just having that.. there may be other brands out there that have a slightly different setup making it easier

The Brio doesnt have the straps that go across to the back (it anchors to the front when rear facing), so that would make getting bubs in and out "easier"
Well as easy as a teeny tiny baby encased in carseat straps is lol

We have used a Safe n Sound since birth and found it's been great. Nice and snug for when she was teeny weeny.
The tether strap was fine, as were the restraints. Never had a problem with waking her.
Having said that, with #2 we will have a capsule, as it will make life easier, I think, with a toddler to contend with
But we won't hesitate to get another Safe n Sound

The rear straps aren't so bad, you get used to them. We had a capsule for only one of our babies. In your situation I think you ought to decide whether to get one after baby is born, but living 45 mins out of towm I'd be inclined to give it a miss. Invest in a decent front pack/sling instead

We had a mothers choice one and Caprece grew out of it before she hit 2 and shes not big. So I would say go for a more expensive brand so it actually goes to 4 or however old it says.

We have had the safe & sound meridian from birth with Sam. The anchor strap wasn't an issue at all, it was easy peasy to get her in and out and to be honest when we was little she would only stir when you were taking her out and then go straight back to sleep.
I have never regretted making the decision to go straight to a good quality car seat and will be doing it again with this baby as well.

Yay, thanks for your feedback Nice to know its doable. I'll go back and have another look at the different carseats now that I've decided I do want one.

Go the Brio. Its a bit more expensive but totally worth it. Theres no teethers over the top of the seat. We've got our wee girl in one now. Love it to bits. If you don't want to buy one I think Baby On The Move hire them.

I got a stroller that had a carseat that snapped in and the carseat only cost and extra $100. I found it brilliant and will be using it again with this one. I also have 2 carseats that both convert but yeah will start with the capsule. I found even when we were living out of town and had to travel a ways it suited me best. By the time we'd gotten to our detination it was time for a feed anyway most often
Actually since your baby is due before mine you could just borrow our capsule and see what you think! If it works for you then by the time you don't need it it'll be time for us to have it back!
*Toddles off to PM you....*

This time around I've used the carseat with the newborn insert, been fine with the waking etc. I got a moby wrap which has been brilliant as well.
The straps are a pain but not completely annoying.
I have the IGC which I think is the safe n sound one.
