I am just over 5 weeks in (well based on my LMP) and I have a potbelly already. I don't know what is up or if I should be worried about it but I have already had to loosen the top button of my trousers. I am rather short and a size 8 but isn't the baby only supposed to be like a spot now? Anyone else had a similar experience?

Yep, you definitely do pop out sooner than some people think but you just look like you ate all the pies. Being small, I would say you would show fairly quickly, but I wouldn't worry!

welcome to the world of varying preg sizes.

I thought I was going to be a monster first 12 weeks, as put on weight really quickly then it all slowed down and I was told I was small for my stage, and then today a lady in a shop told me I was HUGE.

You can't win.
Your body will do what it needs to do to grow a healthy baby and everyone is different.
Try not to compare yourself to other people OR pregnant women in magazines....

i showed real early. Im a size 8 as well. All thought this is my second baby but i showed early with my first too. I think smaller people show quicker too (as there isnt anywhere to hide it lol) and i found that i retained alot of fluid in the first few weeks. I wouldnt worry about it too much hun. Your midwife will let you know if there is any concerns. If your really worried though you could bring it up with her when you see her. But personally i think it sounds perfectly normal Congradulations on your pregnancy.

keeping in mind a lot of women get really constipated in the early weeks.. keep up the high fibre diet and you may even out a bit...

Good luck and sticky vibes xoxoxox

I've had to undo the top button of most of my pants since about 7 weeks. I definately popped out quite early, It was a dead give-away for my workmates who cottoned on that I was pregnant very early.

I'm a size 6-8 and people have told me the same as angel said, being a smaller frame there isn't anywhere to hide it.

Well I am not slim by any stretch of the imagination but have been wearing preggy pants for ages as I found it wayyyyyy to unconfy to sit at a desk all day. I sometimes wonder if my tummy is truly popping out or just fat but I am pretty sure a lot of it is baby since it is hard -underneath the lovely layer of fat to keep baby warm ;-)

lady lizard is so right - you cant win. Try not to listen to what people say to you, they can be so rude. I had some ask me if i was sure there werent two in there as i was apparently so huge (asked midwife and she said i was a little ahead but not much). I did give birth to big baby though.
I also agree that your body does what it needs to for your baby and as hard as it is you shouldnt compare yourself to other pregnant women. My friend was having twins and we were due a week apart and for most of the pregnancy we were about the same size if not me bigger but then at the end she grew more. everyone is individual.

nat I'm the same.. not small and I have definitely needed different pants and my stomach is lifted up a bit already so I imagine I'm going to 'show' earlier this time..

I'm 9 weeks with my 2nd, only 5ft tall and a size 6-8, and have had bit of a potbelly since 7 weeks. I was told by friends at work today (the ones who know) that it's really obvious now I'm pregnant. I think being a small frame does have an effect on how quickly you pop out. I think it's more to do with your muscles and things moving up and out of the way to make room for the growing baby and uterus, and beause we little lassies are so little, it has nowhere else to go but out LOL

I'm the same as all you ladies! I'm 5ft nothing and reckon i "popped" out at about 5 weeks, looks like a little pot belly!!!! I agree that it's way too uncomfy sitting at my desk now - pants cut into me, have to undo the top button, but then have to remember to do it up when i get up to go anywhere!!

thanks guys, I really appreciate it. Its good to know there is no 'normal'. I hope this little one sticks around as I have had a mc a couple of months ago at 8 weeks...so it is a bit of a nervous wait and I don't want to tell anyone yet. At least it is winter so I can hide the 'large lunch' under layers until I am ready to tell...

BB-

There is definitely no normal.
A friend of mine is hardly showing at 20weeks, and I was well into preggy pants by then, and another friend is the same size at 30 weeks as another was at full term.

And it seems to happens whether you exercise or not, or eat well or not. (although doing those has other benefits, so are worth keeping up with)

I also have a friend who is a PT and an aerobics instructor- she still put on 20kg+, and I know others who ate crap and stayed on the couch and gained less than that.

Good luck with your pregnancy- are you going to have a dating scan? We did at 9 weeks and there was a really strong heartbeat on there, so the sonographer said we were OK to tell people as there was a much reduced chance of a mc because the heartbeat was so obvious and strong.

I am 5ft and a size 8.

At 8 weeks i was unable to do any of my pants up so had to buy some maternity pants which at least enable me to keep them up all day.

I guess it all depends, with my first child you couldnt tell i was pregnant the day she was born, I am almost as big at 10 weeks now as I was with her at 34 weeks.

busybee, I was undoing the top button on my pants at 6 weeks.

Remember also, baby may only be a little tiny pinhead size, but everything else is growing and moving to accomodate.
