I need your help. My husband dosen't like any of the names I suggest for babe no 2 if it is a boy go figure
We do have one name that we both like but there is a problem our friends that live in the same town as us have a boy called it. There boy is coming up three do you think it would be on the nose for us to call our boy the same name if we have one.

Hi goldielocks, I think it would depend on how close you were to these friends, And if you are close maybe just have a chat to them about how they feel, but really in the end it is up to you guys its your baby and no one has the right to say you can't call your baby a name. Sorry probably no help but good luck!!

I don't think it matters at all, just remember it has to be a name you both like & the child is going to have it for the rest of there life.

Who is to say that friends will stay friend, live in the same place & if the kids will be close for ever.

I would maybe run it by the friends. The chance they are going to say no is minimal! But at least then they feel like they were considered.

DH's cousin has a daughter who she named the girl's name I have loved since I was young! So, if we found out we were having a girl, then I will be asking her if she minds if we use the name as well, and explaining why i want to. I know she'll say it's ok. We're not close cousins and the last names will be different.

Yeah I agree with Kiwilaurie, approach them first! Is it a popular name?

I had a friend name her daughter "Tanaya" (our daughters name is Janaya) I was quite annoyed, would have rather she just called her Janaya, at least we would have felt honoured!

I agree - if you're close/see them a fair bit, just talk to them about it. We had friends of friends call their wee boy Callum a couple of months after our Callum was born. We're sort of in the same circle of mummy-friends but since this is such a transient city we're unlikely to know them once C is at school, or maybe even in a couple of years time so it's not a big deal

If you really like it and it's the only name you agree on then I'm sure your friends will be fine with it.

I would mention that you were considering it, but I wouldn't "ask" them, though, as no one can stop you calling your baby whatever you like, no one "owns" a name!
I've had 2 friends ask me if they can "have" Charlotte as their girls name, nice and polite, however I find it weird, as I don't "own" Charlotte!!

I agree especially if the name is common - they don't have 'dibs' on it but it would be good to mention that you have shortlisted it.

We know a couple who banned us from using 6 names (no kidding!) for our first pregnancy. We didn't use any of them because we already had our names picked anyway.

But this pregnancy as far as I'm concerned all bets are off - they've had time to get UTD if they really wanted to (oh yeah they don't actually have kids yet) and there is a variation of one of the names we may use if we have a girl.

Its def depends on how close you are too them.

I must admit that I would be a bit annoyed if close friends of ours named their child the same as ours.

My SIL and I have had our children closeish together so we had the "please don't use" names discussion which was actually really handy - none of our shortlisteds were the same so it was fine. DH's younger sister (22, no partner etc) had a tantrum when we named Mac as she loved Max and couldn't use it now...hmm, bad luck.

we had one mum at daycare ask if she could use bubs first name if she ever has a girl...heck I dont own the name....why not! and another ask if she could use her middle name if she ever had a girl...seriously we dont own names - and this was not family etc so I didnt mind...

I am still offended slightly that inlaws called their dog (6 months ago) by our "boys name" - Jack - which they knew was our back up name and is DHs family member name....and so now we will never use Jack = and his cousin called her son Thomas - im ok with that but which was the second name we had so wont be using that either now...

Yeah I'd just have a chat to them and see what they think. I'm sure they won't mind but I get wanting to ask, not that long ago I asked someone (from here acutally) if we could use her son's first name and spelling as a middle name if we had a boy. It just made me feel a little better asking.
