Topic: Iron levels Posted: 01 December 2009 at 1:02pm |
Currently have quite low iron levels so need to take a supplement. I find the recommended tabs Ferrogradumet make constipation a problem. Anybody have any advice or use something different? Am 28 weeks.

I'm taking a iron suppliment put out by the health house called "7-day iron" I've had no constipation problems at all and my iron levels have been good all though out my pregnancy, but then again I eat a fairly well balanced diet that includes lots of fruit and vegetables and red meat 3 times a week.

I took the Spatone iron supplement in a big glass of orange juice every morning when I was pregnant, it is spring water from Wales (I think!) that is naturally rich in iron. Try Healthpost as I found they were the cheapest. Never had any constipation problems with it either.

If you take vitamin c with the iron tablets that will help (or get some iron tablets that have vit c in them)

I found that if I ate a kiwifruit when I took my ferrogradumet it helped heaps - no constipation and the vit C helps iron absorbtion.

Do you know how low your levels are? When I was pg mine dipped just below the normal line and I was prescribed supplements - which made me feel really sick - so my MW recommended taking them every 2nd day rather than every day... (This may not be applicable in your case though!)

I hate ferrogradumet - I've always had low iron and that is generally what I'm always been prescribed but it definately clogs you up.
My MW prescribed me some Thompsons Iron and Vit C which I take 5 tablets of throughout the day (so at the moment I am doing 2 in the morning, 1 at lunch and 2 at night) and I haven't had any problems at all.

I'm taking Iron Melts and they are really gentle on the GI tract. When pregnant with DS I specifically asked the MW which supplements were the gentlest as constipation was already an issue and I didn't want to make it worse. I always buy them, though you can probably get them on script too.

I took Fluorodix, which is a liquid that you can get from the health food aisle in the supermarket - 10ml morning and night before food. It worked well for me, and it has other vitamins in it as well.

Spatone is good if you don't already have low iron, if your iron is low then you need proper iron pills.
I know this because I ended up is hospital at 36 weeks having an iron infusion That was nasty!
Anyways the hospital Dr asked me what i was taking and I said Spatone, and she told me that Spatone doesn't have enough Iron in it if you already have low iron but its great for keeping your iron levels at a good level if they are already good.
Iron meds suck and they can cause constipation, but you dont want to end up with an iron infusion trust me, yuck!
ETA- My iron levels were at 80 when I was admitted to hospital.

Tastic, mine was as low as yours and now my ob put me on ferrogradumate (never heard of it) and she said I should take 1 a day and get a lot of fibre as it will clog me up but I should take 2 a day to get my levels above 20. so prunes and kiwicrush and oats here we come.

There are two types of iron levels too...haemoglobin and ferritin levels. From memory, it's ferritin that should be 20 or over and haemoglobin should be 120 or over.
