    Posted: 23 January 2010 at 11:26pm
Heya, I ended up needing to be monitored at the hospital this evening and will be most days till the little lady makes her appearance (Im 37 weeks 3 days) anyway the doctor said he will talk to the midwife about doing a stretch and sweep next time I see her in hope to get things started

so my question is, what gestation do you get one done and what exactly does it entail? and how long after did you go into labour?

I got mine on my due date and was in labour within 24 hours... niggles started within hours of it... It just involves stretching the membranes... I found it a relatively painless process and only takes a few minutes.

ETA- actually it was only 12 hours later I was in labour...

My MW refused to do it till 40 weeks and even then had to be persueded. Didn't work for me (first two times cos my cervix was too tightly closed so they couldn't get in to stretch).

IMO a stretch will only be efective if your body and baby are ready.

the doctor/ob I saw last night said he will most probably see me tomorrow at my hospital appointment and if he has had no luck if the midwife he said he could do one then for me after checking to see if Im still sitting on 2cm dilated (I was when I was admitted to hospital a couple of weeks back)
I hope it works!

I had mine done at 41 weeks and 2 days and I started having contractions less than an hour later at the hospital, so I guess I was just ready.   I was already 4CM when they did it.

LOL I said 'relatively' ... compared with what followed it was painless Maybe if it hurts more it could mean ya cervix wasn't as ready I guess...

Hope all goes well at the hospital Tastic!

well seen the same ob today as I did on Saturday and he checked me and Im sitting on 90% effaced and 1cm dilated stretchable to 2cm so he did a stretch and sweep. Wasn't as painful as I had imagined. it was uncomfortable yes but I wasn't crying (like the ob made me do when he was just doing a flippen swab last time)
go back on Wednesday for monitoring and the ob said he will talk to them or my mw and doing another s+s in the few days

also got my induction date for the day before my dd so am pretty happy really!

well went to the day assessment unit as told to by the OB and just before I left the midwife did another s+s , so hurt so much more the the OB! however the cramping etc did actually do something!
Im now 100% effaced very soft and 2cm dilated stretchable to 4 - 4.5cm! she was so vigorous when she did the s+s that she warned me there would be blood
she also said she could feel the waters bulging around bubs head which is why she is probably having trouble engaging the last little bit (her head is 3/5 engaged at the moment) she tried pushing against her bum but she just couldn't move bubs any further!

anyway this afternoon I've had nothing but yucky bloody mucus, then a huge big blob of it, I rang the midwife who said it sounds exactly like the bloody show! she however said its doesn't really mean much just it could be a few hours to a few days :/
