Topic: Who has Gestational Diabetes? Posted: 24 February 2010 at 9:44pm |
Hello ladies,
I am just wanting to know who here has Gestational Diabetes and what your 4 blood sugar readings a day are on average.
Before Breakfast
After Breakfast
After Lunch
After Dinner
Are you also on Insulin with food and before bed and do you take Metformin with meals?
Also how are you finding the cravings and what do you do about it?

I had GD with the girls. My GTT came back as 12ish from memory.
Breakfast - 7 units of Novorapid
Lunch - 11 units of Novorapid
Dinner - 8 units of Novorapid
My levels were fine before meals (4-5ish) but still high after meals (around 8-10, regardless of what I ate) but we didn't have time to fully get things sorted before I had the girls, as I had them at 33w, so had only been on insulin for 2-3ish weeks.

Hi Suzy.
Yep I have GD, its a PITA!!
I am not on any meds atm.
My readings are on average
Before breakfast 4.6
After breakfast 5.6
After lunch 6.3
After dinner 5.5
Have only been taking my blood sugars for 8 days but it seems to be going ok so far. I saw a dietitian the other day and she said I could have a tiny bit of chocolate if I wanted so sometimes after lunch or dinner I might have 2 or 3 squares. And also I found Werthers sugar free lollies and they taste pretty good!!!
My tolerance test was ok but my fasting one was high
When did you get diagnosed with GD suzy?

I got diagnosed when I was 17 weeks :( diabetes is in my family and that is why I got tested early. (My biological father, my sister and my maternal grand mother)
I was tested all throughout childhood and my teens and the odd test during my 20's and my blood sugars where all fine, they did only did one test and the next week I was on insulin (4 times a day) and metformin (5 tabs a day). I am hypoing at least 5 times a week in the afternoons as my blood-sugars go way down even thou I have had my correct amount of carbs and insulin.
Personally I am finding it really hard as this has really put me off getting pregnant again as I cant enjoy my pregnancy, I am not enjoying it at all, I have to worry about how many carbs I have for breakfast, lunch and dinner and cant have any of the cravings i want.
When we go out i have to make sure i take my insulin, metformin and blood glucose machine just in case we are out longer than expected and end up having lunch.

Oh Susy that really sucks. You are having a very hard time with your GD. I can understand that it must be very hard for you to enjoy your pregnancy.
Have you had lots of help/advice from a dietitian?

I have spoken to the dietitian once, and she was hopeless.
I am eating all the right foods, I think the problem is they have me on to much insulin and they assume I have diabetes since it’s in my family and I am overweight.
They should have really done a 2nd GTT test and seen if it could be controlled with eating as it wasn't that high compared to others who have diabetes or those that have been diagnosed with GD before starting me on all this medication that causes me to crash everyday.
I am going to speak to my diabetes midwife tomorrow.

Your readings aren't really that high, for the amount of meds you are on. Mine were higher, and metformin was never even suggested. For me though, it didn't matter what I ate - for example, once I had a chicken breast for dinner with some other proteins and no carbs (I was on a fairly limited diet anyway because of fairly bad reflux), so technically my levels should have been ok, but nup! Up to 10!! This was before I started my insulin - we tried to control it with diet for a week first. My mum and 3 of my sisters got GD as well. I NEVER managed to get good levels after a meal, regardless of how many units I had injected.
Oh, and I took my insulin and blood sugar tester thing with me everywhere anyway - it sat in my bag.

I had GD and went through the team at Auckland hospital they were fantastic and would call every few days to see how I was going. I was on metformin but then on insulin when the metfromin did not work for me.
If my blood sugars dropped really low I always made sure I had some lollies with me to eat to bring it back up again, that what was suggested by my GD team.
I know what you mean about the whole not wanting to fall PG again, I thought I would never want to have anymore but DD is 15 months and I would love to have another, even though its 99% sure I will get GD again, and I don't have any family history, nor have I ever been overweight and have no other reason for it, just happened???
Big HUGS to you, it can be very miserable having all the restrictions and having to prick yourself and inject yourself all the time, I hated every minute of the GD except for the fact I stopped putting on weight and bounced back to my pre pregnancy weight very quickly and I swear the mega healthy diet I was on helped that.

Susy how did you get on with your diabetes mw? That sucks that they put straight on all those meds before giving you a chance to regulate your blood sugars with diet! So did they not even get you to do the fasting 2 hour GTT?

I have called my midwife and waiting for a call back so i guess I will hear back on Monday now.
I did have 1 fasting 2 hour GTT test and the day before that i had been to the dentist to get a tooth pulled and we were also in the process of selling our business so there was a lot of stress during this time, which can play havoc on blood sugars.
I told them of this when they asked for me to go in to the hospital but they just straight away put me on all the medication due to the family history no follow up test what so ever.
I had another hypo attack this afternoon (i had lowered my lunch time insulin) and i hadn't been exercising I was watching a movie on TV it went down to 2.3. Yesterday I was standing in line at the post shop and I started hypoing and my reading was 2.1. The day before same thing hypoed in the afternoon and most of the afternoons for the past 3 weeks i have hypoed.
I asked my sister the other night about her diabetes in her pregnancy but she wasn't that interested in telling me which is really hard for me it was like pulling teeth I had to ask questions so in the end i found out her blood sugar before breakfast when on insulin and it was avg of 8.

sh*t that is really low!!! It is hopeless that you are not getting the care you really need. Can you talk to your GP? What would happen I wonder if you took yourself off meds for a day and monitored your blood sugars and were still careful of what you ate?

Sorry to hear you're having such a hard time with GD.... I'm curious though...
My brother & mum both have Type 2, my maternal grandmother and uncle both died from Type 1 and several other family member have Type 2, when I quizzed my MW and GP on this they said I would just do the standard GTT at around 24 weeks.... was quite surprised by this, esp seeing as I'm also about 30kg overweight, but they don't seem concerned at all.... hmm...

Also ... what about your local Diabetes co-ordinator? Seeing as you don't seem to be getting anywhere with your GP or MW?

My MW is now the Diabetic MW at the hospital as my other MW who i was registered with doesnt want to do my care during my pregnancy.
Last night i didnt take my insulin as a test and I actually eat more carbs that i should have to see if it would be higher but it wasnt it was the same, also i didnt take any with breakfast and just had the same for breakfast and it was the same, I didnt hypo this afternoon either......
I am going to speak to my MW and Doctor at the hospital on the phone tomorrow.
I will update with what they say.

Goodluck with talking to them Susy. Not that I know anything about GD really but with your readings being so good when your not taking meds surely means that you don't really need it??!!?? Or as much medication anyway.
Hope you get some answers and some better care.
