What do I do now!!!
I'm six weeks off my due date and MW can't look after me coz her mum broke her hip.
I am so overwhelmed and depressed by this.

Crap! What about her relief midwife? can she do it? Or can she refer you to someone? Maybe hospital midwife team? Good luck! Last thing you need now with 6 weeks to go is this added stress

Yeah I was thinking try the backup. Failing that ring around and explain the situation to other MWs and see if anyone is willing to take you on.

Wow that sucks! The only thing I can suggest, if she doesn't have a back up, is to trot you, your hubby/partner, adn your medical notes off to the local hospital where you are wanting to birth, and meet one of their in house midwive's to try and form a quick wee relationship. I'm sure they will be more then willing to help given the circumstances!!

She has no backup.
She has given me names of two midwives tho so will have to pluck up some courage to call them and hope they have space for me.
Just so not what I needed right now.

i would think that she would be obligated to find you an alternative though. and i dont see how a broken hip would affect that much. they operate on them asap and get the patients up walking the day after the surgery. i think there is something else going on here.
If she doesnt pass you on to someone else or her relief cant take you then i would complain.

Even if you can't get an independant one- you should always be able to get one at the hospital. Good Luck! How stressful for you.

That is so bad that she hasn't organised a replacement. I would absolutely 100% be laying a complaint. Ring around hun and yeah I think something else is going on....

Have you or your DH got the guts to kinda have a go at her? Thinking about it more it just seems more and more rediculous that shes done this. If your not in a great state of mind how about getting DH to ring her or see her and say that it should be her responsibility to find alternatives for her clients

Depending on her mums age and social situation ie does she live alone etc, broken hips can take weeks/months to recover from depending on the health of a person and how bad the break was and when the pt was able to get into surgery- sometimes can take a few days as more acute cases take priority. There are so many things that go into a broken hip, and some people physically cant stand let alone walk the next day. Trust me- this is what I do as a job the rehab process can certainly be lengthy. I wouldnt go down the "is it something I did" path as it most likely has nothing to do with you.
I am really surprised that she doesnt have a backup

Her handling of the sitution would def have made me angry as well! I would ring around midwives and explain what has happened, purely because I dont think yelling at her would make much difference and you may feel better to begin with but I dont think it will change anything

that isnt good enough sunnyhunny - name and shame! so all can be aware of her unprofessionalism.
Does she work for a practice? if so then maybe you could contact someone else there and let them know what she has done. They must surely be able to help you out...and what of all her other patients?

No she is an independant MW.
All her other clients have already been handed on a few weeks back because she was going to stop being a midwife and get a job at the hospital. However, she told me profusely that she would be keeping me and continuing my care. This is what makes me think something else is going on, like it is too much for her (workload) or some other thing.
Anyways, as much as me and DH are off about it, I just don't want to deal with her anymore. Even if her reason is legit I think she has handled it really badly.
Have just heard back from Birthcare midwives and they may be able to take me on...so some good news at least.

Well thats good news about Birthcare at least. I agree with everyone else though - its pretty shocking esp 6 weeks out.
I would def be laying a complaint - its not good enough for her just to wash her hands of you.

I know it is not going to help you now - but maybe let the Midwifery Council know, cos the more I think about it as well, it just seems wrong.
