Topic: Strep B Posted: 25 December 2006 at 10:54am |
So I have strep B for the first (known) time but I have a question about discharge so sorry if TMI...
All last month I was having thick "snotty" discharge, not much but every day, I kept forgetting to tell the mw about it but just put it down to being unwell anyway (cold then conjunctivitis). Well anyway, I'm well now, have been for a couple of weeks, but the discharge hasn't changed. Two weeks ago I did the Strep B test and it has come up positive, and I'm just wondering if the coloured discharge would be related to that? Anyone know?

I have Strep B and don't have anything like that sorry, so they may not be related.

Vaginal swab test at about 36 weeks. You don't have to do it so Deb it could be that you didn't test. First time around I wasn't so keen cause I thought it was going to be like a smear. But it's nothing like that at all.
Anyway there's no "treatment" for it, it seems, except to dose me with antibiotics when my waters break as that's when it can then get to Baby. That's done via IV.
That's all I know, if someone wants to add, go for it

I had it with Andrew. All that happened was that I was hooked up with an IV. As Andrew was coming on out I had an Antiboitic pumped into me via IV. I actually found it no problem. I was induced and wasn't hooked up to the IV till later in the afternoon and didn't got into full on labour until 9pm. The good thing with the IV is that they can put comething in there after the baby is born and the placenta comes away a lot faster. Mine just slid out (sorry TMI).

I had a pap smeary thing at 8 weeks and they tested me then and I didn't have it so we decided not to bother testing closer to the birth.

Oh that's funny because I've been told strep B comes and goes and it's even possible that I had it with the other two girls at term, but just not at 36ish weeks. The biggest problem seems to be that it takes 5 days for it to "grow" and get a result back so they can't do it too close to term or you'll go into labour first

You are right Teresa, it does come and go. I didn't have it at the first swabs and then had it at the 36 weeks swabs so it is a comer and goer.

I have neevr heard of Strep B, I was jsut talking to a friend who asked me about the swab testing and I didnt have a clue what she was talking about cause I never had a test with Haleigh unless its a new thing.
I get discharge every now and then too busymum, but it only jsut started happening so I will ask my midwife when I see her next week about it and about strep b

I had strep b when pg with Alize and was just given a big dose of iv antibiotics and that was that. It does come and go and basically does nothing. Only need antibiotics when in labour for, if labour is proloned or waters have been broken awhile it can pass to babe, other than that no treatment needed as it is not an active infection. This is the informations I tell my patients when giving them their smear and swab results. hope it helps

No you dont really, as the ideal is to have antibiotics 6hrs before birth. Im sure there are plenty of people who have strep b when pg and dont know it

If you have quick labour then no. Yeah it was what he had on sorty st and that is the extreme that can happen. But as long as you contact mw as soon as you go into labour you should have enough time to have antibiotics.
