Topic: Struggling with weight management Posted: 18 March 2010 at 2:18pm |
Hmm not too sure where to put this so just put it in General. Anyways bare with me!
Pre-pregnancy I was 57kg and size 10-12 depending on style etc, during pregnancy I gained a healthy 17kg. Most of that being fluid retention, baby and placenta. By 6 weeks post birth I was back to pre-pregnancy weight again, 58kg (thanks to BF ).
Now almost 7 months post birth (still exclusively BF'ing) I continue to loose weight, not unhealthily but at a steady rate. My pants, shorts and favorite jeans dont fit and a lot of my tops are starting to get too big as well. And I look ridiculous (and am starting to feel that way too) in clothes that dont fit properly. I am constantly pulling my pants/shorts up which is a real PITA. I
dont want to go out and buy a new wardrobe because a) I know when I stop BF'ing I will return to my normal size and b) we cant afford for me to splash out on a new wardrobe that will only get 6 odd months wear out of (although that would be lovely )...
I dont exercise, except for once or twice a week when I go to the mall and do shopping. I eat 3 normal meals a day with snacks and sometimes dessert (I dont buy low fat or count calories, wouldnt know where to start even if I tried lol). We only have takeaways once a week and thats usually something like Indian.
I keep hearing from other Mums that they cant shift their baby weight and I just smile and think how nice it would be just to maintain a consistent weight . I have no idea of my current weight and TBH Im a bit scared to check it, eeek!!
So just wondering if anyone else has the same problem. And I would also greatly appreciate any suggestions on what I can do.

Hi, I don't know if I have any good suggestions, but I didn't want to read and run. Maybe a protein shake or two a day may help maintain your weight? You obviously don't want to be eating unhealthy foods to keep the weight on, so maybe the shakes could help? Hopefully someone will be able to give you some good advice. Good luck

Will be watching with interest, as I'm having the same issues. Constantly walking around pulling my pants up too...

I had the opposite problem but my Plunket nurse suggested consuming a complan type of drink mid afternoon every day to keep my energy and supply up. If you are fully BFing you will use an additional 700 calories a day. This is what you need to look at adding to your usual meals to maintain your weight.

700 calories huh...thats a lot isn't it, if I was doing weight watchers that would be like about 10 points....no wonder it has been easy to lose weight while b/f.
Sounds like a drink would be the way to go...or try keeping a diary for a week to see what you are eating and then compare to suggested diets for b'fing mums. I am pretty sure when I got info about it, there was more carbs than normal and also more dairy so maybe you just need to up these for a while...

It's so interesting that you post this Rianna because I was a little concerned when I saw your latest photos of your wedding anniversary on facebook.
I agree that perhaps a protein shake or nutritional drink aswell at snack times might help?
Perhaps a general check up with the GP too wouldn't hurt?
All the best.

Jaz sorry you will have to excuse my ignorance but I have no idea what or how much 700 calories are... I have never dieted in my life (aside from watching what I eat and eating in moderation, not that i'd call that dieting).
I have always been very active with sport, sometimes doing sport up to 5 days a week before moving to Aus almost 4 years ago. Since we moved here I would do a Step class maybe once a week or twice pre-pregnancy mainly to stay fit rather than to maintain weight.
I think I will give the complan a go. I guess you get that from a pharmacy or health food shop??
Carrie your not the first to say that. I've been getting it a lot in the last few months but didnt think about it much TBH until now.
Hmm might make a trip to the Dr and see what he suggests

My SIL was like that after having her boy a few years ago, seems to be a bit of a common thing.
I would suggest upping your protein, the shake idea is a good one.

I had the same problem but it was later after pregnancy and after I finished BF for me, I was worried and went to the GP, who said that it was most likely just a change in my metabolism after pregnancy and BF. I was going to go and get bloods but never did. I have now leveled out and sitting around 4-5 kgs lighter than pre pregnancy and I do not exercise as such and my diet contains a lot of chocolate and treats at the moment.

sorry im no help really. I had the same problem after my first. I just tried to eat really regularly and also drank protein shakes - although trying to force one of those down can be difficult if you already feel full.
Getting pregnant again fixed it Now i am just sitting at my pre pre pregnancy weight (before 1st child) and cant shift it.

I too had a very similiar problem, although already being small I no longer fitted adult size clothing I put off buying the smaller stuff for ages but when stopping breast feeding and still not putting on the weight I gave in and brought the smallest size 6 I could find. Getting pregnant again helped... for about 9 months and I am back to being tiny again. I honestly eat crap and I know its not good for me, I wish I had some reason to eat healthier.
I second/third/.... the complan idea! (Might start stealing it myself) Last time I just brought it from the supermarket.

I went back to pre-preg weight pretty quick (BTW I'm approx 58 kg and size 10 on top / 12 on bottom). Stopped BF-ing at 5 months, and gained weight after that.
Then I got an illness that affected my appetite for six weeks. I lost 10 pounds (approx 5 kg I guess). I was starting to disappear! Protein drinks are good - look for a good quality one with good protein and fat levels - you can use this to top up between meals. Also great for BF-ing if you are chained to the couch and hungry!

Rianna - not sure how much 700 calories is either but probably another whole meal. I have seen complan at the supermarket. You should probably make it up with full cream milk and maybe add a banana, like a smoothie, if you have a blender.
Natscats - I think you get another 8 or 10 points on
WW if you are breastfeeding.
I found my appetite increased hugely while BFing so I increased my food intake, still lost quite a bit of the baby fat but not all of it.

According to LLL "An exclusively breastfeeding mother, on average, needs to take in 300-500 calories per day above what was needed to maintain pre-pregnancy weight." and to give you an idea of what 500 calories looks like...
500 calories
But yes I agree Complan is probably a healthy option than chowing down on cheeseburgers I have some here and one 250ml serving contains 250 calories.

Jeez Rianna wish I had your problem! I am exclusively breast feeding TWO and have struggled to gain my pre preggy weight. Mind you I eat like a horse. Complain is good though.
