Is there anyone here that is Jewish and might be able to give me a quick run down on what the kosher food rules are (besides obviously not being able to have pork), as far as what can and can't be cooked together, and food handling?

The reason I ask is a) I'm too lazy to slog through all the info on the net and b) One of our Xmas Day guests will be Jewish... so don't want to have any 'oopsies' on the day !

TIA !

Dairy produce and meat must not be cooked or mixed together. The rules for ensuring that meat and dairy do not mix also extend to separate cooking vessels. Those that do not fall into either category are called pareve or neutral food. Meat and dairy products must not be consumed together. If a product has animal fat along with dairy ingredients, it becomes unkosher.

Grape products made by non-Jews is not consumed

Unkosher meat such as pork, shellfish must not be consumed. Flesh, milk and eggs of forbidden animals are not to be consumed. Shellfish, lobster, clams and oysters and scallops and crabs are not allowed in Kosher food Land animals are kosher if their hooves are split and they chew their cud. Thus pigs are not kosher. Fish must have fins and scales, which explains why shrimp and crab are not kosher

please don't take this the wrong way, I just interested in why.
But if you were having 10 people over and 1 was vegatarian(sp) you wouldnt make everything for the one person would you.

I would imagine she just wants to make sure everyone has a good time, and can enjoy what she spends so much time and energy cooking....

Kosher wine though??? That'd be hard to find I reckon!!

If I had a Hindu, I would make sure there was at least one or two dishes that didn't have beef. If I had a vegetarian I would ensure there were one or two things that didn't have any meat. If I had someone allergic to peanuts, I would make sure to tell them what dishes / food had nuts, and which didn't. So, it's not necessarily a religious or cultural thing - as Clare said, my aim is more for everyone to have a good time on the day and not have to worry about what they can or can't eat. When I have my Muslim friends over for a meal I just make a trip to a halal butcher for the meat, it's not really any extra effort on my part - I personally feel that it is one way I can show them that I respect their beliefs (even though I may not have the same ones).

I hear what you're saying rug_nz, it is a hard one to call on And you are right - WOULD some people sway their beliefs to accommodate yours even if it went completely against what they believe in??? Luckily, us here on Oh Baby are fabulously open, and accommodating types who clearly wouldn't think twice about making others welcome

Jax looks like a tricky one but hopefully everything goes well for ya! Good on you for being sensitive in that way, I haven't ever needed to feed someone Jewish but I do try to look out for people who have allergies.

As for wine, I don't think it would generally offend people if there is wine served and also lemonade (or something), and they can choose which they would prefer?

I lived with a jewish family as a nanny ages ago -

Kosher wine - yummy btw!!! - can be bought from the shop inside or at side of the temple in town....I LOVE passover red wine!!!

BTW no shellfish - something we forget being in nz and having xmas in summer.

I dont think there is a fasting on at that time is it = if so then basically no food...be careful using frypans etc as the mixing of food and meat etc in same pans can cause problems for some people...as is the way the meat is killed for halal meat etc...

I would phone the people and ask them waht their restrictions are - as there are differing levels of adherence (my jewish male boss loved to cheat and eat shellfish!!!)

Ok I have no idea re Kosher but I am Muslim and I dont care if the meat is Halal....Nither do my parents and family. On the other hand my husband's extended family always makes sure that when the invite some one to dinner and there is one there who is a Veg then atleast two Veg dishes will be made for them. If there is some one who does not eat fish (because they dont like it)...atleast 1 meat dish will be prepared. Its not religious but good manners??!!

My husband (Hindu)goes to my parents house and eats what ever is prepared ...my parents never serve beef to him......and does not care that it might have been cooked in the same pot....as long as the pot was washed!! My MIL on the otherhand is fussy!!!

Ok totally off topic.....but just wanted to say ...you are soooo nice Jax!!

Yeah that is really nice of you Jax, and i know what your saying, i would try to do the same thing.
Just out of curiosity, what the reason behind the dairy and meat not being cooked together? and why is dairy such an issue, is it because it comes from animals or something? I have absolutely no idea about things like this.

Not really out to impress them LOL Just trying to find something special to show them they are included in our "family" too (even though we're not Jewish). I like the idea of kosher wine actually, so will do some research on where I might be able to get it in Auckland ! Oooh, that reminds me, must find some good gluten free snackies as well...

Hiya Jax,
http://kosherkiwidirectory.co.nz/ should help with the list of kosher brands in NZ - also, the temple at Greys Ave in town has a store where you can buy kosher wine (http://www.ahc.org.nz/intro.php)... (Sean's teacher for the past two years is Jewish so we have tried to make an effort)
