Ring your bank and let them know - they may be able to tell you details of the deposit. Unless of course someone has made a cash deposit as a present, and then it will be yours

Eeek that sounds like someone has mixed a number. I'd call the bank, probably someone somewhere is freaking out about now!!
I know what you mean about finders keepers but there's nothing like a clear conscience ay

Easily enough done, just type the wrong account number and bingo! Deposited to the wrong account, just like that. Often the Banks discover the error and reverse it without notification - so people who think they've got lucky and have spent it, lose out in the end.

It's not always the Bank's fault - the depositers?

I thought the bank needs both the account number and the account name to make a deposit so it would have to be a pretty big mistake.
What did the bank say?

You can very easily type the wrong bank account in online banking, when you are making a one off payment to someone.. why would the bank be monitoring that. If you make a mistake, I feel it's up to you to correct. If the bank made the mistake, then it's up to them to do it.

It's a pretty easy mistake to make Glow. If making a deposit over the counter, the teller may pick it up if the account name and number don't match (IF they are paying attention!), but if it was by speedy deposit or something like that, it's very easy to make mistakes.
We had to be soooo careful doing settlement payments at the legal office I was in, so that we didn't send hte money to the wrong place!

you still have to have the 'human' to input the data if it came over the counter that is.
