Topic: The truth about food Posted: 13 September 2007 at 12:41pm |
There is a programme on tonight about this topic..?
Here is just some schitt i know
Sugar cant make children hyperactive, but it can make them overweight
A healthy human brain is nearly 10% omega 3
You do not need to drink 2litres of water a day, your body will tell you to drink way before you become dehydrated. Tea coffe etc dont count toward your fluid intake
Tomato skins are a great source of Lycopene, a chemical that helps prevent skin cancer- mmm fried tomatoes YUMM
Lycopene is also found it watermelons, guava & red grapefruit, that acts as a natural sunscreen
A regular intake of berries & other fruits & vege can help keep your brain young
There are billions of beneficial "germs" in your gut. Eating food high inn soluble fiber can help them help you
The way food interacts with your body is partly down to genetic makeup, a chemical in broccoli, for eg. seems to be very effective at fighting cancer- but only in people who have a particular version of a gene
Eating a diets high in nuts & fresh fruit & vege- similar to what our ancestors ate- really can help cut cholesterol & reduce high blood pressure

I'll be watching some of this i've seen before but very interesting.
IMHO the trouble with food is its now produced by technologists and not master bakers and chefs.

Ah great! thanks for reminding me about the proggie.
Also Spinach may contain high amounts of Iron, however your stomach is not able to break down it's Iron content so it just passes straight through you.

Its the fat content that carries a lot of the flavour.
Have you ever noticed how low fat foods don't have a lot of taste.

On the crunch programme it said that bad fats clog the arteries and good fats don't. But your body can't tell the difference so good fat will make you just as fat as bad fat.

I;m a little scared of watching. to tell the truth it seems a little jumping on the bandwagon and scaremongering after all the china recalls, clothing etc.
But must admit being "judgemental jenny" at work. I see all these people buying CRAP for their groceries - barely a fresh vegetable or piece of fruit, yet ten packs of chippies, soft drink etc.

Well if you are anything like me. I do a huge shop once a month will all the cupboard stuff and cleaning stuff and canned stuff ect. And then buy meat as they come on special at Mad Butcher and my fresh veggies and fruit from the fruit market.
So it might look like the family doesnt have all the fresh stuff if you look in my trolley either.

ha ha ha. Lol. No not normally. But I do get like 6 bottles of cooldrink when it is on special and there is a family function coming up. And I only buy sweets now and then and then only one pack. (if I buy more they will get eaten just as fast as the one pack.)
And dont worry I also look and then think wow the trolleys differ so much.

The thing that gets me is when a retired person goes through the supermarket and buys enough to fill the seats only. Some of those people seem really poor
Free TV guide btw

I am also guilty of looking into peoples trolleys, its really interesting what other people buy.
Heres some more food facts for you......
Did you know you are more likely to eat more if you are cold
Salt is used in abundance in kitchens, it (like fats) brings out flavours in foods, and also preserves food and makes it last longer. Lol reminds me of when I was young and my mum used to tell me too much salt will make your legs drop off, which wasn't very funny as our greatgrandmother had no legs.
Capsicums/Chillis are great, chilli has been known to increase metabolism, lower blood fat levels, increase your blood coagulation time and also are great when you have a cold as helps clear the nose. They are also a fantastic source of Vitamin C ( red peppers have more vitamin C than oranges)
Cranberries (as I am sure many of you already know) are great for UTI's, they contain tannins which help to stop bacteria sticking to the UT.
Oatmeal is great to help lower cholesterol levels, as is wholegrains and some veges (more than others) like the dreaded brussel sprout. If only my Dad would listen to me more!
Some frozen Veges can contain more nutrients than fresh, as fresh veges lose their nutrients while being stored but fozens are likely to have been frozen very close to the time of being picked.
