Topic: Solids Posted: 22 March 2006 at 8:54am |
My baby is growing up! Hannah is 5 months today! Anyway, I was going to wait until 6 months but she is starting to try and eat my food so have decided to start solids. So I have 2 questions:
* What did you start giving your baby? Have done a bit of reading and found various things - start with baby rice, start with veges, start with fruit... Not very helpful!
* What time did you start with? I was thinking dinner time after her feed cos she seems to be feeding for longer then and seems a bit grumpy so thought maybe she was hungry? But all the info said start with during the day - cant really work out why tho.
Cant believe shes starting solids already, where have the last 5 months gone...

i started tobys first meal as dinner i think, it was more convenient for me...mum said when she was having babies thats when they used to start but now they say lunch. i started gabriel with lunch and it doesnt seem to make a difference as to what meal you start with. if dinner is more convenient go for it.
i think i started with farex cause you only need a really little bit to start with, and pureed apple and or veges. it doesnt really matter i think so long as the consistency is right, almost more liquid than solid to start with. i think i used little cans for the first couple of feeds, 79c and it last for ages.
good luck, feeding gets really interesting and this is when the work begins.

I started Josiah at 4.5 months, with baby rice (Farex) at dinner. It filled him up enough that he started sleeping through one of his 2 night feeds! Then, I started giving him Farex at breakfast and fruit at night, then Farex at breakfast, fruit or custard at lunch and vegetables at night (building up over a month to that stage).

I started Kobe at lunchtimes and just gave him the can of fruit and vegetables because he wouldnt have a bar of the farex or anything like that, even hated the cereal cans. If you buy the wee cans you can freeze it in an ice cube tray and then when you need it just heat a cube at a time because they dont take much more than one or two cubes to start with so you dont waste a whole can

I think the first foods are just meant to be something easily digested, pureed apple, baby rice etc fit the bill.
I started Han on pureed apple in the afternoon. I only chose afternoon as that was when she and I were most relaxed. (After dinner we were both tired etc)
So yeah... now the real fun begins - a whole new stage!
Good luck

I started Joey on baby rice as well, we started in the evening although it is recommended that afternoon is best because apparently mosr relaxed like Nikki said. We never had any probs though. I then graduated on to pureed apple, pear, carrot, kumara etc. one type at a time because apparently not supposed to mix at the start to get them used to tastes and check for bad reactions I guess.? anyway now at 7 months he is loving his food and eats anything, LOL, 2 times a day (lunch and dinner), it is so much fun!!

I think I started Jake at three months. Looking back it was too early. I was just soooo excited about it though. can't recall why. Anyway, we started on baby rice. They say do veges first as if you do fruit first they may develop a sweet tooth. Read a mag a few weeks ago that said this was rubbish. Jake ate lots of pumpkin, kumara, bananas, not so much apples, but in Jpaan they were hideously expensive and "someone" kept using his little cans of apples for roast pork. He also loved peas and silverbeet. Now he eats almost anything, but also gets fussy. He will only eat certain things on certain days. ONe thing he loves all the time is weetbix though. He MUST have warm milk however - no sugar ( thanks step-mum!)

I gave Zaara rice cereal with apples and she just loved it!!! It says give 1 tea spoon full...she ate 1.5 and wanted more. However she did not do a poo till late next day. So I did not give her any on Sat. Yesterday again she had more cereal and she loved it...but no poo yet So I might skip it today.....Her body is obviously trying to get use to it!!

Another reason they say to give first solids (and each new food introduced) during the day is so you can kep an eye on them for a couple of hours to make sure they don't have an allergic reaction.

Emma, do you know if you can get dairy free rusks? or similar thing? Hannah just wants to chew on my toast crusts and stuff, so someone suggested rusks, but they have milk in them... Any ideas?

i think i did farex cereal first then pureed fruits, vegies etc...
A good idea is to make a big lot and freeze some into icecubes then next meal pop them in the microwave and voila cuts down on the cooking
Exciting, shes on solids already a? growing up fast!!!

I started Charlotte on Organic baby rice then moved her on to kumara, carrot and potato. I only fed her vegetables for the first 2 months and then still kept them as her main food for the next few months following that- I had heard that feeding her veges rather than fruit meant that they will eat their veges alot better later on and its easier to introduce fruit after veges than the other way- eg they are less likely to take to veges if they are given fruit first as they prefer sweeter flavours.
Of course some kids will still eat veges fine but I thought I would give it a try. She eats anything and everything and still really loves her veges- I don't know if she was always going to be like that but it seems to make sense to me and I think it may have helped :)
