Topic: Waitakere and overweight Posted: 24 May 2010 at 10:38am |
Has anyone given birth at Waitakere hospital and been overweight?
We are moving to Whenuapai in October and I'm due in November, I had planned to give birth at Waitakere, however I have been told if your BMI is over 35 you can't.

If you go to North Shore do you have to change midwives?

Depends on the MW. Some deliver in both places, others only have contracts with one.

why is the real reason as to why you may not be able to deliver at waitakere if you are overweight?does anyboby actually know?? i was told due to maybe needing a general anaesthetic, but that makes no sense to me really...

At a guess I would say the added risk. If something goes wrong they may not have the facilities to fix it. I'm not sure what that something may be but that's my best guess

yeah i think that is maybe the reason although when my mw told me that id have to deliver at northshore as i was overweight i found it discriminating to some degree to be honest although ive been given the all clear to have baby at waitakere now..

My midwife didn't give me a reason, just said I can't give birth there due to my weight, that they wont take me.
I am registered to give birth at Auckland Hospital, but I am currently changing midwives and hoping for a home birth anyway.

It will be for emergency purposes... if you need a general the risks are higher if you are "medically" obese and waitak dont have the staff or facilities for it.. you would need to be transfered to NSH and in the case of needing a general then things have to be hairy to begin with! Dont think I would want to take the risk... On my hospital notes a complication noted for my c-section was obesity I only had an epi and was under 100kg.
Have you discussed it with your AKL mw CJ? Lucky she does both anyway!!!!

I've got my first appointment with my Akl MW on the 9th October - getting organised will discuss it with her then.
I don't mind going to NSH if I have too as its not that much further from Whenuapai - just don't want to have to go to Akl as that is way too far.
