My husband is Scottish, our first son has a Scottish name, and we thought we would have a Scottish name for number 2 aswell.

He really likes the boys name Tavish. However, I really don't know what I think of it. It is unusual, and I kind of like it, but do you think it is a name that will get picked on? And do you like it?

What is your older son's name?

I quite like it (but I come from a Scottish family so it isn't that unusual for me). Kids will always find something to tease about if they want to. There are plenty of 'made up' names out there much odder than Tavish so I think if you like it go for it. There are some wee girls on here with lovely Irish/Gaelic names and I think they are lovely and unique.

Oh, actually there is a wee boy with a gaelic name as well, I can't remember how to spell it though but I thought that was a cool name too.

I'm not scottish and i like it.

Not too unusual sounding - easy to shorten.

If you like it go for it, I nearly didn't go with my girls names but it was members here that convinced me to go with what we wanted rather than what we thought would be considered normal here.

Like clover said there are lots of made up names out there. Based on my experience so far, I've found NZ to be very tolerable of names that are considered unusual.

I like it. It is nice to have something to remind them of their herritage. If you are unsure you could always use it as a second name. My girls second name is Ronja, a swedish name as I'm from Sweden.

I like it too and I think the same, if you like it go for it!

We will be having another Irish name for our next (as I'm from Ireland) and there are a few that I thought people in NZ might find different or not the norm but DH & I love them and that's what counts!

Thanks. Our first sons name is Fyfe.

I am feeling much more positive about the Tavish now!
I really needed some opinions, but didn't want to tell family or friends yet as I would like the name to be a surprise when bubs is born.

I think it's rather cute, I know someone who has that as their last name. I say if you both like it then go for it! But are there any other names you like as well? As maybe wait until he is born then decide the one that suits him best?

It is unusual but hey, celebs call their kids stuff like Pilot Inspektor and name them after fruit?!

I like it but the most important thing is that YOU like it

Our daughters name is Irish and our second daughters name will also be Irish...and quite hard to spell but hey the family link is there and NZ is a very multi cultural society, people will get used to it lol

Good luck

I like it too - we have chosen a name which reflects the fact that I have some celtic heritage but is still a well known name so I'm all for having something meaningful like that :)

I like it... !!!

every name I ran past my mum she finds something un pleasant it rhymes with that the kids at school are "bound" to tease him/her with- but you can never predict these things-- so I chose not to think about it like that!! ... and I stopped telling her potential names about 20 weeks ago!!
