Topic: Stair gates from ACC Posted: 02 September 2006 at 7:35pm |
This is probably a big red herring but my husband heard from a "bloke in the pub" that if you write to ACC they will either provide or give a grant towards stair gates. Living in a house on many split levels this is somethng we will be thnking of in the next 12 months, but before I make a prat of myself with ACC I thought I would check out if anyone else had heard this and not just two blokes in the pub. I have looked on the website and it doesn't mention it so am not holding my breath

I vaguely recall our plunket nurse mentioning this! Something like if you have more than three stairs then you may be eligible? Our house has no stairs so I didn't pay attention but I did think it was interesting. You could ask plunket?

My plunket nurse told me that they could provide them for us (perhaps at a small cost) if we didn't have them.

Ahh I should have more faith in Neil's ability to drink Guiness and talk sensibly at the same time, we shall speak to Plunket when the time comes then.
Thank you, I knew I needed a more reliable source than some bloke in Molly's on a Saturday afternoon

I got one!! But it was through a special ACC talk and I had to fill in a form then they delivered the gate to the place the meeting was at... haven't heard of just ordering one from them though?

This was a special promo that ACC ran a year or so ago so I think you will find that it has finished, its just that maybe Plunket or midwifes weren't aware it was on for a limited time

They are about $40 aren't they? And if you have more than one set of stairs it sure adds up!!! (Especially added to all the other baby crap you have to buy!)

We have four sets of them and they were around $80 a set... and then we also had to construct a special gate for the stairs because of the width and shape of our stairwell. Kiddies are expensive.

we were interested as we have four sets of stairs that need definitely gates and others that would be a safe option, not everyone's circumstances are the same and every little bit helps at this time,
Like the idea of putting them out to work as soon as they can walk though. there's probably a law against it though, dam the politicians

The gate that we built was by far the cheapest and is the most effective. It doesn't look too flash - being MDF - however if you have lots of areas to guard, then a couple of hinges, some MDF and a latch is a cheap and safe alternative. It's also good because unlike our expensive manufactured gates with bars, Andrew can't see through it and therefore doesn't throw his toys through the holes to the other side. You could always paint it if you wanted to make it look prettier too....

I agree, they are darn expensive, esp when you need more than one!
We got ours off trademe, they go quite cheaply on there and the ones we got were like new.

I think Trade me will be the way to go, in fact Bingo's middle name will be Trade Me at this rate.
Neil could probably make something but it will be so over engineered that I will be unable to work out how to get out of it too

My landlord built an MDF one for the outside stairs here. Gotta love him!

Have a look in the warehouse and they have them there for around $30 - $40 if anyone looking for them....the baby stores are always more expensive but the warehouse ones are just as good. We have one already to keep the dogs out and it has lasted us nearly eight years now! Also a lot of second hand places have them if you need more than one set. In scheme of all things baby this is a small cost. Dont even start me on the cost of cots etc....UGH!
