(Does putting TMI at the top make more people look? Haha I'm like that )

My m/w has started reminding me that I should be doing some perineum stretching (ick) in prep for the birth of this little bub, especially since I had an episiotomy with #2.

My question: did you do it and do you think it works? I think I need some convincing to get past the "ick" and just do it... especially since I *did* do it in prep last time

he he me three!! I thought the researchsaid it didnt make much difference? I didnt do it and I had no problems, I thought it was more to do with the babies head size and position, esp after 3 babies!!

Ick no. And Maya and Mercedes had giant heads, and I had no stitches with Maya and only one after the twins.

Not sure about whether it helps after an episiotomy but after reading a recommendation you use olive oil to do the massage in a pregnancy book I decided definitely too ick for me.

lol, my midwife told me it was a load of bollocks and not to waste my time. Although she did tell me to insert evening primrose oil tablets up my foo foo, to ripen the cervix. Which of course i did. If you try that only do it at night and wear granny undies. YUCK

LOL!
My midwife advised me to do it as I'd had a complicated tear the first time and was keen to do anything to avoid a second one.
I was a bit grossed out but I found that doing it in the bath made it easier.
I also did the EPO up my fufu twice a day (with liners in!) from 36 weeks on. I really think that makes a difference, as everyone I know who has done it has had no tears.

My midwife told me to do it and I didnt, but even if I hadve done it I ended up with a forceps delivery so I was having an episiotomy no matter what lol.
I have heard form some people it works but also I know of others who did it and tore badly. So I guess it all to do with your body.

I think I should probably clarify that Hannah was c/s so I have actually only pushed one bubba out and she was 8lb 4oz. Things stalled a bit during pushing, I just could not get her head out... hence the episiotomy.

I think I might do it religiously this time, then if it doesn't work I never have to think about it again! CaraMel's idea of doing it in the bath seems heaps better than anything else so far....

Yeah doing it in the bath sounds a lot better.
Haleighs head got stuck during labour thats why I had an episiotomy and forceps delivery.

I did it a few times, but midwife said not to bother. Unfortunatly the perinium is not the only part that can tear. I ended up with 3 tears, only one of which was my periniem,..so even if I had done it, it wouldnt have stopped my labia, or vagina tearing anyway. ( sorry if TMI!)

My MW advised me to do it and she reakoned that me doing it was probably the reason I had no cuts or tears at all. I did it in the bath so that it was done out of the way. I am going to do it again for this time round as well.

I have heard of woman inserting a tampon soaked in EPO to help bring on labour as well and one said it was under advise of her MW.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I think its alot to do with genetics- some people stretch better than others. Some get strech marks and some don't- they have better skin elasticity. I think like how they say that using stretch mark cream can lessen the severity of the marks you get, the perenium massage probably lessens the severity of the tear but if you're going to tear alot you will probably still tear.
I did it first time around with DD- I used KY as thats what my midwife recommended. Its was horrible but DH thought it was hilarious. Seemed to work ok as I only had 1 small tear. Will do it again in case it did help as I would much rather do that than be ripped to bits!

I am a total prude! I saw this thread days ago and didn't want to read it because I was worried it would be gross- its silly because I always end up answering the gross ones anyway
