Topic: Emergency kits, how prepared are U?? Posted: 16 October 2007 at 1:01pm |
|
I was reading stuff today about the earthquakes in the south Island (I never felt them) but it made me think.
We have three children and although we have a gas BBQ and heaps of canned food and a well stocked first Aid kit, these are just everyday items, we don't have any candles or tourches, batteries or even water stored incase of emergencies.
Who here has an Emergency civil defence Kit and what do you have in it? Or are we as New Zealand just really complacent and think nothing will happen.
Just Curious

We don't have anything "officially" prepared. Water is easy.. hot water cylinder if you have the type that can be drained.. it makes plenty of drinkable water
We too have a gas BBQ. We have plenty of canned food all the time. We have 3 torches.. I think thats cause we thought we had lost one so bought another etc lol.. we have candles too.

I put one together a while ago from the civil Defence thing we got in the mail - just a big plastic box with our first aid kit, gas cooker and extra canisters, torch (must buy new batteries tho!) and enough food for 3 days (tins, rice, pasta etc). I figure if we are able to stay in our house we would also have whatever food is in pantry/freezer as well as all our utensils. Oh also in the box are all our plastic plates/knives etc and toilet paper, plus some plastic bags. Need to restock the water too.
Only thing left that I want to do is have a box to put all our important stuff like photo negatives, passports, documents etc into that we could grab if there was a fire.

We don't have anything, is on my to do list lol
On the ad they tell you you could be anywhere, probably won't be at home etc, so I wonder how useful the kit would be if non of us are here or can't get here to use it.
Where were the earthquakes? I didn't feel them either

It was centered 50kms from the bottom of the south island but was 6.7 and was felt right up to Christchurch with another big aftershock measuring 6.2 around 10-28am. I never felt a thing!

I figure for us living in a small town where everything is easy walking distance and hubby's work is about 10 mins walk away, as long as we weren't out of town when something happened, we would be ok to meet up and get home.
Also we are really high here so not likely to flood, a long way from the sea so no tsunamis. Worst we are likely to get is an earthquake (we have had a few big ones here as we are on the fault line) or a massive storm where we are cut off.

We haven't got a kit together but we have a good first aid kit, tons of canned food, gas bbq, candles(scented ones!) and frozen water(I use it in the summer water my rabbits are hot!). We have talked about where we would meet if we weren't together, who would get chloe from kindy, the nearest CD point. But to be honest we only talked about because I had a horrible dream that there was a massive earthquake
For most of the people I know getting ready for an emergency is on their to do but that's about as far as it goes.

We have the makings of one, but not all in one place we're pretty safe from floods, but we would struggle to go anywhere if it did flood again, and being in the Manawatu there is always a chance of earthquake.
I remember when the '04 floods hit and we had nothing but 1/2 a cooked chicken and a loaf of bread in the house, and no running water, and we were cut off from the closest towns. It was scary how isolating it was.
At the time I was living in Bulls, and we had the service station but no eftpos terminal. Having available cash is something to remember.

My fil is a fireman so we have a kick ass emergancy kit, don't rely on the hot water cylander though, if this is damaged in the emergency or the house becomes unstable then you need an alternate source, emeregancy kits should ideally be designed to be moved out of the house quickly should you need. We have three large plastic bins with handels under the stairs, we put tinned food in them and rotate the food out and into the cupboard on a regulat basis (and raid the rice when i run out) we also have bottled water, pasta, dried food stuffs, first aid kit, camp stove, blah blah blah this is all my DH's doing though.

We haven't got much organised. Last time I saw the torch I couldn't get it to work, so I figured it needed new batteries and now I can't find it! We have matches and candles - ornamental though. No bottled water here, but we do have regular stock of tinned food nowadays. We wouldn't last long on all that, but we live close to the hospital so it's not like we're in an isolated place or anything.

We have candles, about 5 torches and lanterns (we go camping a lot), purification tabs for water (if all else fails with finding water elsewhere), freezer packs and our cooler bag (just to keep meat not stinking for too long - prob won't be worried about it anyway, but good to have it available). Always have enough gas in the gas bottle as well as small canisters to hook into our little gas burner. Heaps of rice, pasta, canned stuff, cereal (you can survive a long time on cereal!) and then there's the wonderful army ration packs that contain muesli with milk powder (just add water!) yay!
It's a good idea to get some longlife milk too if you've got kids, just to supplement their diet over the 3 days, and keep fluids up. We've also got a kickass first aid kit (again, army issue) with everything you need to perform minor surgery if need be haha (that's DH's job, I don't do needles).
Just remember, if you take a kit in your car and you have cans, TAKE A CAN OPENER! They're not THAT easy to get into without one

Stuff to look forward to then Emma . Something I am going to buy (once they come out), is the s26 formula already made in the treta(sp?) box so that I will have that for Josh.

We live on many fault lines & are in the rim of fire Ive got rain water & grey water tanks ,BBQ. Gas cookers, 3days worth or non perishable food, torches, first aid kit, blankets/clothing, radio, batteries, swiss army knife & such like, in a box, in the hotwater cupboard- near the fire extinguisher. I crazily thought about getting an inflatable incase we flood out then we could float to safety

In a airforce house, and I couldn't get to work in Palmy as road was flooded at Awahuri, Feilding was flooded, road north to Wanganui was flooded, and so was parts of Marton.
Bulls water treatment plant was washed away, so we didn't have running water for 36 hours, and not drinkable for a week.
We weren't badly effected at all, but was amazing how unprepared we were.
