Topic: Help! He wont drink Neocate Posted: 06 November 2007 at 6:24pm |
Ok so have just got the neocate through, at last, but he is refusing to drink it. He sucked on the bottle pulled a funny face then spat it out. Have tried a few more times but now he is screaming before I even get the teat in and he pushes the bottle away.
Any ideas of what I can do? I'm thinking might just have to wait till he's starving, but would be interested in any ideas a little less drastic than that.

Try adding a few drops of vanilla essence. Or try 1/2 and 1/2 of what he's been having up till now ie: half his old formula with 1/2 Neocate then gradually up the Neocate until it's 100% Neocate.

Thanks I wasn't sure about whether I could mix the two and the nutricia website was really unhelpful, it just said that they won't refuse it cos they don't have the same tastes as adults, very helpful, perhaps they should try giving it to him.
He wouldn't take half and half but he took it 1/3 so will stick with that for a bit, he wasn't overly keen and has only taken half a feed but thats a start.

Was going to suggest the same thing. Hopefully in a few days he'll be into it. Good luck.

Even if it takes a couple of weeks to get up to 100% Neocate you will get there. The gremlins were stubborn monkeys when we switched them from Follow on to S26 Toddler Gold and would only take it made up at 3/5 strength, but over the past couple of weeks I've gradually been sneaking in an extra 1/2 scoop per feed and now we're almost up to having it at full strength.

PS. Have you smelt the Neocate? I wouldn't drink it either, so can't blame wee Spencer for spitting it out! Willie took a suck once and even he spat it out lol!

Yeah its really gross, kinda smells like raw potato I definately didn't blame him for not drinking it.
Thought it was funny that nutricia say they don't have the same tastes as adults, they also tried to claim that it tastes nice.

Who did you talk to at Nutricia? Tara who looks after the 0800 NEOCATE number is really lovely, if you talk to her she'll send you out a heap of Neocate info.

There help line was closed for the day so I did a search on the net for "refusing neocate" and got the FAQs bit on the UK nutricia site. Not helpful!!!

There's a book Tara can send you with all sorts of tips and recipes for cooking with Neocate, tips on introducing solids to kids with allergies etc. Plus they have really funky yellow Neocate bibs

Oh cool, I did get a really useful allergy book when I phoned originally after the gp had said "oh well just keeping trying formulas till you find one that works" So that might have been Tara, will phone and ask for the recipes though and the funky bibs.

Its not so much bland more just gross, seriously it stinks. I don't think the normal formula smells or tastes particularly nice but this is in a whole new league.

I think the Neocate burps are the worst!! Ha ha.... eeew.
OK, my little Neocate booklet from Nutricia states: "I have just started my baby on Neocate at my doctor or dietitian's recommendation and am having difficulty getting my baby to take it. What should I do?
Try feeding the Neocate formula when your child is really hungry. If weaning from breastfeeding, have someone other then mum offer the feed initially.
Try adding a small amount of golden syrup, pure vanilla essence or brown sugar. - Approximately 1tsp golden syrup, or 1-2 drops pure vanilla essence, or 1/2 tsp brown sugar to 240mls of Neocate formula. This should only be done until the child is established on the formula (usually 2-3 days). Check with your doctor/dietitian before doing this. Once the child is taking the Neocate gradually decrease, then stopp adding them. Golden syrup and brown sugar can be harmful to teeth so use it only for a few days and never in bottles given before bedtime. Do not add other flavourings to the Neocate. These are unsuitable for children with severe food allergies.
Try adding a small amount of Neocate formula to the formula previously tolerated by your child, eg, 1/4 Neocate to 3/4 previous formula and then gradually increase the amount of Neocate and decreast the amount of the other formula. Ideally, try and do this over 3-4 days. Check with your doctor/dietitian before doing this.".

Yeah I phoned neocate cos he did a power chuck after I mixed his two formulas....apparently I shouldn't have made them up in the same bottle .
He is now drinking 120m/l standard formula and 90m/l neocate and we are gradually increasing. She wasn't keen on the golden syrup idea but did say we could use it as a last resort. If he won't take it any stronger we are gonna try vanilla essence first.
DH has tried sticking him in the naughty corner for not drinking it but it didn't really work. hehehe.
