You will reach a point where it won't be comfy on your back anymore, I found I got really short of breath as I got bigger and further along if I lay on my back for too long.
I'm a tummy sleeper so find sleep during pregnancy challenging too!

Yeah I think it is more that it is very uncomfy and things get squashed! I couldn't handle it and that was much earlier than 28 weeks!

There is an artery in your back that the weight of the bump can compress which is why the recommend that you don't lie on your back, or on your right hand side. (doesn't leave many options does it!!!). I read that you can elevate yourself slightly with a towel/blanket under the rightside so you are on a slight angle and that then allows you to still sleep on your back.

Right hand side is OK, left is better as there is greater blood flow to the uterus, but lying on your right hand side also increases blood flow to the uterus, just not as much as the left side as the left side has a major artery supplying blood to the uterus.

Yep that's why a good midwife should get you to slightly lie a little sideways-ish when doing her fundal palpations etc from that time onwards, cos it can actually make you get very very lightheaded from a lack of return as well as far as i know.

I found scans almost unbearable with the gremlins when I got bigger coz I had to lie on my back for up to an hour at a time, it was awful. And often I was so stiff in the back by the end of it I could hardly get up.

Im finding it difficult to sleep these days aswell as I usually lie on my side but sort of on my tummy aswell, but I cant do that anymore as my belly gets in the way! Or I would sleep on my back, but I feel funny when I do that now and always end up rolling over onto my side. I find I have to sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs and one under my belly so I cant sort of lean on it but not lie on my tummy, I find that the best position for sleeping.
I have back issues and my MW basicly said this to me "women have been sleeping what ever way they find comfortable for years without knowing the benefits of sleeping on your left side, so sleep how ever YOU find comfortable" so thats what Ive been doing.
My mum said she used to make like a hole for her bump out of pillows and sleep on her tummy lol

Sometimes theres not much you can do about it tho - I keep waking up on my back, am obviously turning over in my sleep! No stress I reckon, your body will just do what it wants. Tho I have to agree when awake I cant lie on my back for long.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

yeah I quite often wake up on my back, not much you can do about it really. Apart from pillows around yourself, which helps.

Unfortunately for me sleeping on my back was the most comfortable as I got aching hips from sleeping on my side!
