Topic: Teeth & Brushing Posted: 12 February 2008 at 11:50pm |
When did you start brushing your bubs teeth? And what did you do to start off with (your technique)? ...when are we suppose to start properly brushing them??? ...the majority of my friends still haven't started with their bubs and they have had their teeth for a number of months now...
I have tried several diff approaches but Lucas STILL struggles and clamps down, will put up a right performance and not let me anywhere near his mouth ...I find the muslin with a dab of toothpaste an easier option as opposed to introducing a toothbrush just yet ...but gosh he gets VERY upset and after all the effort that goes in to what should be a simple task, i doubt they are getting cleaned nearly enough as they should!
Any better ideas? Help?!?!?!

I used a flannel and toothpaste like you at first and after 1 year of age I moved them up to a toothbrush. I'd always brush mine at the same time and let them have a go first. Then I'd get in there and give them a scrub myself and sing the toothbrushing song:
I wake up in the morning at a quarter to 1, I think to myself 'lets have some fun!' and brush my teeth
Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch!
They crack up at my attempt at singing which opens their mouths, very handy!
Good luck!

Oh, and my plunket nurse told me it doesn't matter about scrubbing them 'properly' like we would our own, just so long as you get every surface of every tooth once

I am still struggling to get Alex to brush his teeth. Sometimes, if he is in the right mood, he will let me, but other times its a full on battle, so I leave him. His bottom teeth are a bit yellow, and need a good scrub, but I don't know how to do that without causing WW3!!

i gave the kids a toothbrush to play with in the bath from a young age to help get used to them... and when their teeth first came thru i just wiped with a flannel, no toothpaste.

I gave Rhiannon a tooth brush in the bath, and let her chew on it...and now she will let me brush her teeth, and i then give her the brush with just water on it, and she gives them a brush as well. (she is at that "i have to mimick everything age") which is great, because it means i can get her to do things

I'm pretty quick until the molars are thru. I let them have the toothbrush while I do mine, then say "my turn", scrub all over (quickly) and put the brush away. I don't bother with toothpaste yet. (not for that age, but for my older two i do)

As Gandt said give them a brush to play with , and wipe teeth with a flannel, when they are young and their teeth first come through there isn't much of a plaque buildup
When they get a bit older use a soft brush (actually , always use a softbrush, for yourself as well, use a hardbrush and you get lines on your teeth eventually) and a childrens toothpaste, eg Colgate Milk teeth, and only put a small amount.
The key is to make it enjoyable and not like a chore, other wise your child will be like some of the patients we see who are 23 and brush their teeth once every 2 weeks (no sh*t)
I used to tell C to smile big like a monkey, to get the teeth at the front, and then open wide like a hippo, to get right to the back (or whatever animal you think of)

When I first started brushing James' teeth I just used to use a flannel and rub it over them when I introduced the toothbrush I just let him chew on it with a little toothpaste to get used to holding it and now we do the same accept I have a quick brush afterwards I do notice when he's teething he will not let me do it but other than that he is pretty good with it.
