My poor DF has this, he gets such bad ringing in his ears that he cant sleep until he's really really tired, therefore he stays up on the computer till nearly 3am sometimes  I feel so bad for him as he is just SO tired all the time and its really starting to get him down in the dumps, and Im a little worried about him cos of it.
He is going to the docs about it on Monday but I was just wondering if anyone has this or knows anyone that has it, and what they did or do to help it? I know it cant be cured, but there must be ways to help him sleep?

Could he go to sleep with an ipod or mp3 player and headphones playing quietly?
When I was working early shifts and living with noisy flatmates I used to do this to go to sleep.

Mike has had problems with his ears all his life and has had a few operations, and now has a constant ring. He just used to leave the radio on in his room constantly at a very low volume - not loud enough that you could even hear it was on unless you were trying to, but enough to generate a bit of a background noise to mask it.

My DH has the constantly in one ear and there's nothing that can be done. He just does his best to ignore it. He finds that when there's background noise it's not as bad, but as soon as it's quiet it's terrible. It sounds horrible to have!

Yep he has tried going to sleep with his ipod and stuff but he cant sleep with the music  and if the radio is on even quiet the ringing in his ears over powers it, its that bad.
He finds if he is really really tired he will hop into bed and just fall asleep, so tonight we are going to try him coming to bed when I do and him reading a book and having a hot chocolate, as that always makes me nice a sleepy so Im hoping it will help him.
I really dont want him to get depressed from it, as it can cause depression from lack of sleep and frustration, and he is getting more and more frustrated by it.
I guess we will see what the doctor says aswell...

I have this in just one ear, I got it after an ear infection a couple of years ago. I went for hearing tests and saw an ENT specialist and also had an MRI (basically cos it was in one ear not both which can mean that there are other ear related problems). I was offered counselling to get techniques designed to help you ignore the ringing but I declined it as I can mostly ignore it anyway, it just gets worse when I have a headache or am over tired etc. Listening to radio static was one of the techniques that was mentioned but I think I would find it more annoying and it would probably stop DH from sleeping.
Good luck at the docs, in the meantime perhaps he could try some camomile tea before bed.

yeah thats a good idea cuppatea, he actually has some "relaxing" tea in the cuboard that he could try aswell.

Would sleeping pills help?? I had this a few months ago (about the same time PND set in) and my GP gave me some sleeping pills and they worked a treat. Only needed to take them for a week and then I was fine.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

He would need to take them everynight as what he has cant be cured, you kinda just have to put up with it which totally suckes.
Last night he came to bed when I did about about 11, he had a hot choc and read and was asleep before me  Sooo he actually got some decent sleep and he didnt wake all night even when I cloimbed over him to get out of bed to pee lol
So I think we will do that everynight and see how he goes.
