Topic: Campbell Live needs our help Posted: 29 April 2008 at 1:03pm |
Funny that we were just talking about this in the economising thread:
Campbell Live Urgently Needs Our Help
Campbell Live on TV3 at 7pm is urgently seeking to interview Parents finding it financially difficult in the current economic climate. Are you struggling to buy groceries for the family? Have you sold or are you contemplating selling the car or down-sizing the car due to increased petrol costs? Are you struggling to meet mortgage repayments due to increased mortgage interest rates? Are you seriously considering shifting “across the ditch” in search of a better life for the family?
Reply by email ASAP to hstory@tv3.co.nz providing a brief description of your situation, along with your contact details --- name, phone number(s), home address.
So looks like Campbell Live is going to do a piece on economising too.
ETA: contact details for Campbell Live direct

But it sounds like what Sunday star times are doing - purposely looking for people who ARE struggling, to illustrate that we all are. When in fact, they should look at normal families and see how they are economising.
do i make sense?

I agree Liz and that's why I won't be responding as I don't consider us as "struggling" although the rise in food and petrol prices does affect us in the sense that if I buy the same groceries I did a year ago I wouldn't be able to buy other stuff and I don't just drive for the sake of it as much anymore. I guess we're what you'd consider a 'normal' double income family but we don't fit into their criterea.

I totally agree - they should show "normal" people making sensible cut backs, not just people that can't afford to feed their kids (again )

Or maybe they are, and that's the point? Some people have a warped sense of priorities, ie: broadband is more important than milk

Yes, I can't say we've cancelled Broadband or Sky TV over it all.

Perhaps people should write in and tell them that actually we are all coping ok and they should go stir up trouble somewhere else.

I think when they publish things like this they make people think about their own spending and be a littl emore critical than what they normally would be.
Yes you need to think about the money you spend, people have been buying things and paying them off for years in NZ and maybe that needs to be thought about a little more.
But when I see all the sky dishes in the poorer areas I find it hard to listen to the "how can I buy food" debate when they have skydigital???????

...and big tvs, and suped up cars with fantastic stereos.
Obviously not everyone in low income areas is like this but I agree that those that choose to spend their money (or borrowed money) on luxuries shouldn't complain that they can't afford essentials.

Mm, good point about the difference between actually struggling and needing to economise. Even though I complain about how thing are more expensive and we're having to watch our spending, I'm not actually having to do without essentials, I still get luxuries and I can still pay the mortgage. Not to do the "back in the old days" thing, but I remember when I was a kid, we had some much less than DH and I do now, and we easily survived with 6 kids on a teacher's salary. I think the ideas about how to economise are good - you often lose track of where your money goes and how you could actually be smarter with it.
Has anyone read the North and South article this month? They seem to be taking more of a focus on how can we cut back rather than the "we can't afford bread" thing.

I must admit when I saw the email my first thought was "but surely the people who are struggling that much won't have internet over food and therefore won't get this email????"
To be honest I think they are painting a worse picture than what it is. Yes we are a nation with high debt which is scary (including our family) but honestly I don't think every single family is suddenly on the brink of starvation!
(of course I also wouldn't be saying no if they scrapped GST on healthy foods etc to make them more affordable than junk food)
