Topic: controlled breathing in labour Posted: 07 March 2006 at 10:11am |
was kinda surprised when our antenatal person said that we shouldn't be doing controlled breathing while we are pushing, is this correct.
mind you i have always thought that taking a deep breath and counting to ten while pushing seem to be a bit excessive, and would also cut of oxgyen to the baby.
so i am assuming that our bodies know when to push and that our bodies actually take over????

You definitely know when to push believe me! But I do remember I was breathing loud like you see on all the TV shows and my midwife told me not to as it wastes energy. I was surprised by how quiet the actual pushing part was, none of the screaming and panting you see on TV at all!

They let my epidural wear off to measure contractions and discovered I was 9cm but then I made them top it up again, even tho my midwife wasn't keen on topping it up so close to pushing time, But I didn't have any probs pushing her out. I guess I must have good old childbearing hips lol.

I'm pretty sure I held my breath while pushing! hehehe
I think the most important thing is to remember to breathe, rather than have controlled breathing. Mind you, in my labour, by the time I got to the pushing part, all technique went flying out the window!

your body does naturally take over. with my first birth i had and epidural for blood pressure and was told when to push and i was quiet, i cant remember breathing! but i must of! lol.
my second birth, was without an epidural and i remember being very loud and vocal (funny vocal, had the room in fits of laughter) i remember at one stage being told i had to pant (and that was hard i wanted to push and get baby out) again i cant remember how i was breathing. i never learnt controlled breathing though, so i did just let my body do its thing. both times i had a real short time pushing (only a few pushes each) fingers crossed it goes smoothly again this time

lol Ana - that's why I'm not sure I'd ever let a man be present while giving birth!!! (I suppose I'd come round... but it scares me anyway!)

I can give you one piece of advice, don't clench your butt when you push, I did this I think because I was worried that I would tear.. couldn't help myself, it was a natural reaction.. but it made pushing take longer than it should have.
And yeah, my antenatal class said don't worry about the breathing either.
