At what stage do you know that your toddler is ready for TT??

For a while Brenna has said 'Poo poo' and pointed to her nappy after she's done a poo. She now seems to be noticing about 5 minutes before and is telling us 'poo poo' (to which there's nothing) then about 5 mins later 'poo poo' and there is one! This afternoon she even took me to the toilet saying poo poo and pointing to the toilet.

What should I do??
I work full time and was expecting to toilet train her at the end of this year over summer (she'll be 2 in October). Her nana's look after her, so it is possible to TT her anytime, but I want to do it (weird I know, but I feel guilty for working and so far have always been there to see her first milestones and TT is a biggy IMO)

I don't have a potty or smaller toilet seat thingy - what is better to use?

Thanks

Have you tried sitting her on the toilet when she says poos before she has gone? Ashleigh isn't really doing any of that yet - but I sit her on the toilet before her bath at night so she is used to it. And if I say "Do you wanna go wees on the toilet" she will run there.

As for the potty or toilet seat - I guess it is up to you. A potty would mean she can easily get on/off herself but means you having to empty it    I personally am going to just use the toilet. You can get the seat inserts from the Warehouse. And also a stepstool so she can get up

Ohhh good luck, maybe you could try in the next holidays if you are wanting to do it yourself? You never know, you could take her nappy off and never look back...

My SIL who works in Isla's daycare prefers a loo seat just cos there is apparently easier transtion from that to normal loo seat, cos they are already sitting on the loo,...and so its easier when u out etc,...but Isla cant get on or off it herself so I am thinkinbg of getting a potty,..maybe! She loves sitting on her seat, but so far hant done anything in the loo, so doesnt get what shes meant to do there! She knows that u sit there,..get loo paper and put in down the loo,...then get off,..she puts her seat on teh ground behind the loo where we keep it, then shuts the loo, stands up on it, fluches it,..goes and washes her hands! Just doesnt actally go yet. She does this everynight before her bath,..then gets in the bath and pees!

PAFT teacher told me to include tiloeting in her rountine before each meal,..take her to the loo sit her on for a few mins,..then even if she doesnt go get her off, wash her hands then eat. She said for me to do each step myself first and get her to copy,..so I go loo,..then she does then we both go wash our hands etc.
Im not really ready for full-on toilet training cos Im sure it will be so much easier in summer, and she hates getting dressed and in winter has so many layers on,...so I only do it when she gets the seat out herself which is about twice a day.

I just wrote an article on TTing, it's in the toddler section. It has some stuff on signs of readiness etc.
I'm gonna wait till summer with the gremlins, but that's partly coz of the new baby being a disruption for them.
We never used a potty with Maya, I didn't see the point, but we did use one of those toilet seat insert thingies.

from what I have read, what Brenna is doing is the first stage of TTing - recognising her bodily functions.

For us the toilet thing was never an issue as she has always (since 3mths) sat on a potty as it helped with her constipation.
I just noticed a lot more dry nappies, meaning she was holding on for longer periods and also the constant battle to get her to lay down to put the damn thing on her just wasn't worth it.
We just went with the flow and if she wanted to sit on the toilet and wee/poo then that was cool with me. She's now into her 2nd week of cold turkey no nappy and today she came home from daycare in the same outfit I sent her in - no accidents at all and 6 wees on the toilet
My only advice is don't rush her, don't make her sit on the toilet/potty if she doesn't want to and even if she does have an accident, put her on the toilet/potty afterwards and explain (as much as you can to an under 2! lol) where the wees go (in the toilet not on the floor)

I understand totally where you are coming from about missing out on helping her through a major milestone - but you still have the evenings and weekends

Thanks ladies That seat with the handles sounds great Kellz! I might have to go shopping this wknd
When she took me to the toilet saying poos, I asked if she wanted to sit on it and she nodded so I went to put her on there but she then got scared and changed her mind. I think getting a small seat insert will be a good place to start then I'll see from there.

Wow Toni! Caitlin is doing great! What a

We're sort of looking at this too. DD is 2 in September and has started doing similar stuff - dry when she wakes up from naps but wees five minutes later, telling us when she has done a wee or poo or sometimes just before. We got her a small toilet seat just because I thought it would be more of a natural transition to the toilet than a potty when she is bigger. I haven't got her a stool, just lift her up there. We only take her on the toilet if she asks, which she does a couple of times a day, and she only does anything maybe once a day, but we figure just go with the flow. She's really funny now - her latest thing is waiting until we've settled her on the seat then looking up and saying 'go away!' and 'shut the door!' because she wants privacy on the toilet! So funny!
I let her come to the toilet with me so she can learn by watching - TMI maybe, but I figure it's a good way to teach her.
I was going to hold out for summer as well, but if she wants to go now then I'll let her lead.

Yeah - there's that too! I just like to think it's because I'm teaching her a valuable life skill, not just trying to avoid the screaming! We have a gate between our kitchen and the toilet (which is through the laundry) so I get the gate being rattled and yelling/crying as soon as I disappear!

Isaac said to me a couple of weeks ago, "undies please mum, no nappy" and has been in undies during the day since then. I hadn't really tried before so waited until he told me. He's still in nappies for his sleeps, but hasn't had too many accidents (except at kindy where I think he's having far too much fun ;))

She sounds like she might be ready, it will just be up to whoever is looking after her to take her to the toiler I guess :)
Isaac is 6, Ethan is 4, Rico is 2 and Hunter is almost 1!

LOL, the gremlins like to come in and talk to me when I'm on the toilet, and our toilet is fairly small so it's a wee bit cozy in there with all three of us, sometimes I get stuck sitting on the toilet for ten min till they decide to leave and I can move
